I put forward the 6.5 Creedmoor. It's as shootable as the 243 with more slap down. Up here the 243 has always been a good cart for wolf. And the 6.5 is even better. My favorite rifles are carbine's. I chopped the barrel on my 6.5 Creedmoor to 18.6" and it is got all the snort needed. Even tho I gave up 175 fps by going from 2950 fps down to 2775 fps with 130 gr bullets.
This summer if I can scratch together the extra $$$ . I'll be getting a Ruger GunSight Scout in 6.5 Creedmoor. Pretty much my ideal of a perfect all around general purpose rifle. For game smaller than brown bear.
The 223 with a standard cup and core soft point flat base 55 gr bullet works pretty good. But the 243 and 6.5 are much better for big dogs.
I am a bit worried about that. Had a Browning BAR 300 Win Mag with a silly Boss thing with a muzzle brake. It was terrible loud. I sold it after two deer seasons. CVA does make a thread protector if one wants to remove the brake. Recoil does not bother me in fact I kinda in perverse way enjoy it. Wierd!
for a muzzel device to tame recoil it has to direct everything backwards hence the noise. muzzel stability is up and sideways output.
Yes they are loud I have one on my winchester model 70 chambered in a 300 Weatherby mag. The boss is excellent at taming the recoil and tightening the groups once you find the sweet spot adjustment! But for hunting I bought the BOSS CR, which stands for conventional recoil. All that it is is a weight that you can tune your load without the extra noise but you get the full recoil of course. If I am going to the range for the day and and putting a lot of rounds through it I'll put the muzzle brake one back on.
Define big bucks. People want the 6.5 because they are snipers. They want 1k yard accuracy just like all the articles tell them, even though they only have the local gun range 100 to shoot at. Numerous cartridges have been around for a long time like the 260 that are similar. In the hands of average Joe, they wont know or be able to tell the difference. 99% of gun people don't know the difference between a 260 or a creedmoor without Google.
Now ----- Don't Hate ,,, Appreciate. ! ;-) If Remington would have done right by the 260 , we probably would never have had the 6.5 Creedmoor. They didn't so we do. All there is to it. Only knuckle heads think getting an entry level rifle in 6.5 Creedmoor would make them 1k eligible. Most people just want a nice little rifle that will do the job they need it to well and Not beat them up. The 6.5 excells at that. And rifles like the Savage Axis, Ruger American and the affore mentioned TC are very affordable. And all tend to be amazingly accurate. An inherently accurate rifle and cart that is mild in the recoil, not overly noisy or rambunctous and kills well . Is pretty much just perfect.
My Ruger M77 Mk 2 Hawkeye stainless /synthetic with 1-4×24 SWFA Classic scope and Champion swivel and pan bipod. Top pic is what is my caribou killing field. I've gotten 6 bou at this spot . Closest was 137 paces with my 375 Whelen Ackley Improved. 2 a friend got with his06 :-( . and the other 3 with this rifle . Closest was 300 , farthest was 373 . lasered yards.
What I was thinking of was the Thompson Center Compass, currently $225 after rebate. There are videos on YT of this gun in 308 shooting 1000 yards. THOMPSON CENTER COMPASS 6.5 CREEDMOOR BOLT-ACTION RIFLE
The PA Governor lifted the ban on semi auto rifles for hunting, then the game commission made a law saying that a semi auto can't be used for big game.
My Dad bought a 300 win mag BAR mkii with the BOSS. Yeah, it's loud. The non ported end piece threaded in is less annoying. I'm sure something had been done as aftermarket to reduce the noise. My dad wanted me to have that BAR, I just have not collected it yet from the cottage.
That one video is funny, the reviewer saying oh that shot doesnt count. those are the internet groups I've mentioned. The other video doesn't really show anything. I can set up brand new shooters to smack steel repaditivly at modest ranges. Not a fan of the t/c, the only thing I liked about it was it's bolt. Not to say it's a bad rifle. Just doesn't impress me. Glass is something you can't cheap on. After proper accessories you will still be in it over 800 so spend a few hundred more on a modular rifle with some aftermarket. If you want a budget rifle, find a beat to hell savage, kreiger or preferably criteron barrel it. Go compete. Records have been set new and old doing just that. It's all marketing. I've yet to see or read about a t/c being amazing. The Swede, 260(ai) and 6.5 are all so close it literally doesn't matter. Anyone informed will say the same. Its small details between them that would sway the desicion. The 243 is even more of a kitten and would suffice for just about everybody. The creedmoor is that long range sniper though. It's not a bad thing that a .264 is becoming mainstream or more popular. 5-6 years ago there were bullets galore for reloading .264 but limited choices. Even during those dark years when panic buying occurred i could easily find and buy264. Once the major manufactureres starting pushing rifles like the RPR it became harder to find... but then It also opened the door even more for bullet (and brass)choices as the market responded. You were stuck with a few match bullets mostly hunting prior to its popularity gain. But now there are some good choices because of the popularity. Same for rifles!
I love m77's. They just plain work. I'll have to post up my m77 mkII SS all weather in 7mm rem mag. It's treated me great for nearly 25 yrs.
What's the big deal about shooting 1000 yards? That's more shooter than rifle. We have competition up here military ww2 rifles iron sights thousand yards.. Rifles are 70 yo Springfield.. 06 chambered...
We have a couple WWII matches a year here also, but not 1000yds, We do 300yds iron sights. Even 300 is a long shot!
I agree Dave, it's not closest to bullseye its hits on target.. Uncle won it few times.. Point was ..these are old used by GI rifles.. Gun can hit target.. Can shooter
We also have a couple "cowboy action" rifle matches every year, Only 100yds, we do a Thanksgiving match and Christmas match. I have a 1953 Eisenhower edition Winchester model 94, 30-30 I use for that, I took 3rd this year "again". Some of the older fellas can really shoot The 1st place winner was 78 years old Good for him, you get 25 rounds to shoot on one target, and he had "all" of them in there! I threw three off the paper.
I get tickled at these guys that post these pics of shots the size of a dime and say if my gun won't do that I get rid of it, well pull that sucker off that sled and hold it standing up and do that, then you got something to brag about. I might see using one for sighting in, but after that their not needed. no situation I know of will give you time to shoot from a sled.
