IMG_4147.jpeg I’m new here and I clearly have a problem.

One stack is honey locust and one a mix of red oak/locust/pecan and the rest is hedge. More hedge and shoulder wood further up the hill, I will have to get a photo.

Welcome to the club Josh! We all have a problem in this group, wishing we had more firewood. :loco:
How many cords do ya have and how many do ya burn per season?

If my math is right, I think I have around 45 cords. Typing that out makes me question it, but that's my best estimate. I am still figuring out my wood consumption (only second year using the stove), but I think its around 10 cords, depending of course on how early I start and how late into spring I burn (both for hot water).

I am still bringing up a few stray logs from last winter. And there is a pretty good pile of fresh hedge posts that can be readily converted to firewood.

Impressive! That's about double what I have c/s/s (cut/split/stacked) and over double what I burn per season.

I've got about 10cord css'd. I have room for a few more racks that have aged out. Using 3-4 cord/yr, I have plenty. The 3yr plan rules here!

I do have a stack of RO dated 2018. That needs to find its way into the stove this coming season. Ditto for a few stacks datec 2019.

We've only been here since 2020 and put the stove in summer of 2022, so I had to overcome having essentially no stockpile of wood for the first two years. I'll burn one and two year old wood this year. This past winter, we cleared about 4.5 acres of pasture that was overgrown with hedge. We'll clear more pasture (2 acres) this year, but there's a lot more variety -- hedge, locust, black cherry, hackberry, maybe some mulberry. Lots of cedar that will just get piled and burned. I do save some cedar stumps for the outdoor fireplace.

How long do you think to season red and white oak? I had a big one of each dropped off this year from in town. I'm planning on giving them over two years... both were dead standing, but were still very high in moisture content.

What is is in your 2019 stack and how did you store it? Is starting to break down?

Give the oak three years if green, two if dead. One of my pet peeves against it is the loooooong drying time. I have limited space and sell most of the wood I scrounge so I seldom take oak even though it is very plentiful around here. I'm in no way knocking it as firewood...great stuff if you can wait. The beauty of a three year plan.

    I age everything that's green, 3 years.

My oldest stacks are red oak. It still looks solid. I can see where the bark has released. I'll have lots of that to burn or toss into the woods. It's stacked outside and covered. Here's a thread I started about my woodyard. A good help if you have insomnia - This person's woodyard nirvana...kinda....sorta

Your cherry seems to be the quickest to season. You might want to focus on getting that split and stacked.

At the top of the page, you'll see "Resources". In there you'll find this chart, among others.
    Firewood BTU & Drying Chart

You'll get there. A way to help, locate other FHC'ers nearby. Have a bunch of logs available and have a getogether. Those logs would be bucked and possibly split in no time.
