Wow, after seeing the chart, I see I'm in the gomfa (get off my fat a $$) category as I have none. In my defense however I'm new to this, just moved into a house where I can burn wood to offset heating costs. Sadly I rent, so the two fireplaces I have available don't have inserts; but with electric heat I'll take whatever help I can get for heating the house. I've found alot of good information here since I was allowed to join, so thanks in advance for any answers to any (quite possibly stupid) questions I might ask.
I think so too, my gf told me I can't buy the "once you go lumberjack" shirt....she's not a huge fan of beards; even my own. Lol
Welcome, and a word of advice. Petition your landlord for permission and maybe some subsidy toward and insert. You will send more heat up the chimney of an open fireplace than you can hope to burn.
Welcome. Ixinnailer I agree with @bobdogo02 you need an insert or a freestanding stove in a chimney..
Yes, I would like to do that. My first step tough is going to learn about them (cost, efficiency, life expectancy, value added to property, etc.) before I attempt to persuade him. Better to have the relavant information and look like I have an idea of what I'm talking about first. Of course, if we can actually get in a position to buy the house off him, then I'll have free rein. Lol
Nice to meet Ixinnailer , you will find the answers to your questions here on inserts, and you'll have some fun doing it. Enjoy, and remember that the key to burning is seasoning wood for several years. So get some wood stacks going to do just that and then work on your setup or whatever you decide to do.
One thing you can do to get more heat from a fireplace, is put in a fireback to absorb and radiate heat. It doesn't have to be an antique, an old cast iron stove door or a flat piece of scrap steel will work.
Welcome Ixinnailer as the others have mentioned, it's a great place to hang, make friends, and learn.
@lxinnailer, you'll figure it out or she will(hopefully!) follow suit and realize its hard to tame a wood beast hehe!
