I was going through withdrawals up here in Northern New York! o_O What the heck happened? Did Backwoods Savage split firewood horizontally? I told him he would come around eventually!:p

I had so many scary thoughts and was wondering if we would ever have FHC again.

I finished splitting the box elder that I cut down at Son #2's house last fall. Friday after work and yesterday. Some of the larger rounds were so wet that I could see moisture getting pressed out of it as the splitter was going in. Friday my wife helped stack, reloading a rack that I emptied this winter and a pallet space that also was emptied over the winter. Yesterday I split alone, most huge rounds, splitting vertically and just stacking where I could reach from my milk crate. After I finish my morning coffee I will go out and work on stacking that pile on the pallet behind it. No hurry through as it is about 30 out and I'm sitting by my fireplace insert.

The box elder will feel like balsa wood when it dries out. Doesn't smell too good either.

I already have some that is 2 years dried and it burns ok. There is an old saying, wood is wood and all wood burns. So since the price was right and the tree had to come down, no sense in hauling it to the dump. :)

I do the same. I've cleaned a lot of fencerows over the years and even cut up the honeysuckle.

It all burns but with that said, Cottonwood is a lot of work for what you get. LOL

X2 on the honey locust. Takes multiple years to dry but you'll be rewarded with some serious btu's.
I also see some Norway maple in the mix. You done very good sir!

That Norway Maple is pretty good stuff, about the same density as White/Green Ash.Heavier than Silver Maple but not quite as much as Sugar/Hard Maple or Red/Black Oak.Burns hot & clean, long lasting coals with a slight ''maple syrup'' aroma same as all the Maples

Neighbor 2 houses north of me I did some pruning of their big old NM back in 2011 or so,ended up with about a pickup load of limbs 2" to 8" diameter, the smaller stuff is always welcome, only the biggest ones need split in half & I left a few of them intact for longer burns.

First last July & twice again last Fall & late this March after some overnight heavy rain/wind storms another neighbor 3 houses north of me on the corner had several big dead limbs come down from their big Norway, all of it in a pile on the curb next to the street. In a ''public'' area,it was off their yard, blocking the sidewalk, part of it sticking out into the traffic lane of the busy street I live on.....

So guess what I did next? Walked down the sidewalk the next morning with my PM700,made a few cuts (kept it all in long poles 8 to 12 ft long) carried it all home in 5 trips on my right shoulder...Cut it up on my heavy duty sawbuck on the backyard driveway, thats faster (and easier for me) than cutting it all into short pieces on site, much easier for me to carry 1 long stick than a dozen short ones) I'm waiting for the rest of that big bastard to come down next   I'll gladly park my truck in their driveway for a few minutes if need be:D

A big storm came through knocked down a ton of trees. I asked the tree guys to dump the wood in my yard.

    Thats the FHC spirit! :salute:

That wood looks like elm. I hope you have a hydraulic splitter. It's a bear to hand split.

Ive looked into buying a supersplit. Im curious how well it does with the elm. How soon will you split it? Can you post a video when you do?

Yea sure thing! I am new to wood heat and firewood hoarding about 3 years in. So I am unfamiliar with how the wood will split. Most of it is straight grained. I will see if I can get some split next week.

Youd more than likely remember if you've had elm. It can be a stringy mess when split why a lot of guys wont touch it. Decent firewood when dried. Ongoing joke here between elm lovers and haters.
