The smaller logs by the road had the loose bark. Ive yet to sell any. I have 2.5 cords of it CSS i harvested as dead/barkless last Winter. Checked with MM the other day and close to ready. I was talking with a newer customer couple weeks back. He heats with a stove and it seemed to peak his interest. Id love to get a couple regulars for BL. My other friend likes his hickory. Waiting for one of his shed bays to open and ill bring him some one year seasoned stuff for 21/22 season. He, like i was unaware of it needing longer drying time. I have maybe a face cord of dead BL nuggets/shorts for him to try...mebbe ill convert him. Seems BL is easier to find than hickory is for me. Most of my customers are casual burners and to them wood is wood.
Make sure your customers know that BL is stinky to burn, and that u nlike other woods, it doesn't have robust flames.
i could take some here in a little bit ....... now the smaller blocks of red oak and loscust i placed in my large pile of splits that got much larger ( i took a pic or two of it a while back and put it in another post how much do u think is the pile what say u guys i believe is the name of post )
will do Mike, thanks! I burnt a few dead nuggets in the firepit to make charcoals for the grill and noticed the limited flame. Put a piece of bark in there as well and PU! Bark gets tossed into the woods now!
I cut down a healthy BL last weekend that was growing too close to my house. About an 8" tree. I know BL is stinky but that was disgusting, and I don't usually mind the smell. I wish I could get my hands on some large BL logs to put on a sawmill. Makes perfect outdoor lumber and fence posts.

Is there such a thing as "roadside" wood? Meaning logs cut by tree services clearing back from power lines and left behind? This had one tree that went into the road and the others were on the guys property.
Yes, there is. So when I worked for the previous interlock company, I traveled frequently. One regular route back to the shop I passed 3-4 huge oaks that were sawed down on a power-line right of way that went through a state game land (out in no mans land). There was a municipal building kinda close and one day I stopped in to ask about said wood. They proceeded to tell me I'm about the 10th person to ask, and gave me a number to call. Doubtful, I made the call and left a VM. No reply, but they explained basically its the game-land that will not give an ok and the power line people are hopeless. Those logs are still there rotting, I guarantee. Many thoughts as I'd pass them... electric saws, winches, etc. Hate to see it go to "waste".
Years ago, right about the turn of the century, my neighbor and I came across a guy that wanted some tornado damage cleaned up. Turned out to be about 70 black locust trees. We worked all winter there. Heated us both for a couple years.
W Wow 70! They grow in small groves around here and are a fairly scarce tree. One area i scrounged some was a grove that size but all smaller trees with largest being maybe 10" DBH. Exit ramp on a highway. Funny you say turn of the century and i automatically think of 1900!
These trees were probably 50 or 60ft tall, maybe 2’ thick. We had to take a tractor with us to pull some out of the bay. We were busy.
I missed your post, lol. I have never seen black locust here and I think I looked up its native range and it's north of here maybe 75 miles. I sure would like to try some. Next time I go north, I am going to take a chainsaw in case I see a blowdown, lol.
