I'm wondering if it might be better to wait for slightly warmer temps to call, maybe a lower price then? Just a thought.
This guy was selling 4 cords for $350ish. Pretty reasonable. Theres a place not too far away selling 9 cord loads for $350 or 450, but it's all huge stuff. If I had the room for that much, and room for him to offload, I'd be all over it. I need to move my pile of splits asap and call while the ground is still frozem.
That is a good price. Good idea if you can make the time. Last load of logs I got (20 cord, 10 years ago) had to wait for the ground to dry up.
Yeah, you don't care to work in the heat, so better now than later. Also given that you'll be burning it next winter, you want to have it all split by the time the temps get warmer.
Absolutely. I have about 2 cords of oak that have been cs&s for almost 2.25 years old at this point, and it appears that I'm gonna run out if I dont seriously ration this month, so I need to put up 2 cords of ash asap.
On my way home I decided with the snow just about gone I would look to scrounge some dead fall branches. I drove down a different road to check out one of the small dog walk Riverside parks closer to Newark, but came across this sight instead. They were in 32 inch long sections and look like red maple. Looks like these sections were possibly left because they didn't fit in the shredder and they were a bit too heavy for the average person to lift. 18" t0 20" diameters and soaking wet.
Pleasant surprise when you werent expecting it. Hats off to you car/suv hoarders getting wood in your vehicles. I guess i take having a truck for granted! A friend of mine used to put logs in his Dodge neon. He would put the back seat down and into the trunk with lengths. I talked him into buying a P/U. He will still only load the same amount as he did in his car!!! LOL!!!
I thought about getting a pick up, but in the "cityfied" area around me, I rarely come across enough wood at any given time or site to fill a pick up bed. So until I move to greener pastures it's going to be car hoarding for me. That said, if one comes along for the right price I would definitely consider it.

Guess my hoarding day wasn't done after all. After my last post the Misses wanted to take the dog for a walk in the park. When I got there my hoarding senses were tingling. There was a bit of oak and birch debris all out in the field, not much, but enough for a night or two with these milder temps. I dragged everything within 200 feet of the car and cut it up. Most the oak is ready to burn with just surface water, but half the birch was waterlogged. Yes Molly snow is about 80% gone, but its very mucky out there.
I give you guys credit. I think if all i had was a car i would be doing the same. The desire to hoard never goes away! I occasionally come across "city" roadkill in the net town over. My GF would KILL me if i ever used our 2011 Murano to get wood! I did use her old Durango to bring roof shingles to my job when my old 2001 F150 was in the shop a few years ago. SHHHH! she doesnt know!
The cargo space in the car is not the limiting factor for firewood hoarding. It's time. I'm getting further and further ahead, just because I'm putting in the hours. There's plenty of wood out there to get.
Yeah, I'm lucky my wife is easy going and I try to keep plywood and blankets down. Now even if this effort to preserve the car satisfied your girlfriends requirements she would probably still kill you since while driving 60 mph she would inevitably encounter a rather robust and ugly spider jumping onto her from the dashboard.
ROTFLMAO!!! Thanks, made my night! True story...seems that during the warmer weather i run into wood spiders, big suckers with long legs, while making firewood. I caught one and put it in the bathroom sink. I later hear a scream (it couldnt crawl out of the sink) I come running and shes freaking out to which i pick it up by the leg and toss it out the door...her hero!!! Bees, spiders, snakes dont bother me at all, but it skeeves me out to touch the food remnants in the kitchen sink strainer...go figure! She would be going 80 not 60!
didnt see the follow up post. Nice little score...no splitting! Do you keep a chain saw in the SUV in case of emergencies?
There have been times that i didnt have a saw with me but needed it. Maybe that should be a requirement to be a FHC member?
