Ah yes... the dank! Shame they cut down a healthy oak to put up a telephone pole.

No no, all car hoarders welcome here. Throw a log in your car, post about it, it's all good.

I finished up splitting the stuff in the driveway. After its glamour shot, I tarped it up to keep tonight's snow/rain combo off it. Tomorrow, or whenever it isn't icy underfoot, I'll find a home for it in the back yard. IMG_20190220_3251.jpg

Gotta stash it somewhere! I wish I could put it in the front yard, that gets tons of sun. I think I'll have to stash this temporarily in the woodshed. I need to put together a mega stack for all the oak I have to split, but that will be a spring project.

I know I have been mulling over that same idea about using the front yard for seasoning wood. Yard is so small and low on space so was thinking maybe lining up a row against those evergreen yew shrubs in the background (sorry I don't have better pictures, and that snow is not today, but where that table i was refinishing at the time is sitting). It's about 15 linear ft of availability, but I think it will look too shabby and so probably not happening. Those evergreens separate the properties, but a stacked cord of wood would also starve the shrubs of light. Like you my front yard gets all the sunlight.

What's under the porch railings? Lattice? Garden beds? Could you put down some gravel inside some landscape ties, and stack on that? I agree, you don't want to block the yews.
Maybe you should just buy the house next door. It would make a dandy wood shed!
I've got plenty of space in the front yard, but my concern is pilfering.

Yes, you remembered that I'm looking into that house since the guy ran off to the Carolina's. Property values in my town are the cheapest in this area due to being a border town to Newark so Im not sure it will pay off with all the work that house would require. Then again my town is nice and safe while at the same has a very diverse population and all the surrounding towns have been gentrifying so maybe this town is next?? This would make it a more attractive investment, but there are no guarantees.
Another reason why property values here suffer is that we have a transient population of renters and only about 50 percent of the people living here actually own their home and aren't just temporarily renting. So this makes it difficult to get legislation passed or good things voted on because many here don't feel a pride of ownership and so don't really care about things like the school system or anything involving the planning board. The other group comprising the rest of the hood is the remaining aging hold outs of the last era and they don't want to vote in or pay for any capitol improvements. They are also Hell bent on fighting off the large global establishments like Walmarts and the like and I can't say I blame them. So here we are, an anomaly in the middle of a very active and changing landscape of uppity neighboring towns and all within an eye shot of NYC.

Anyway, this is the porch situation. Lattice with thorny knockout roses which have grown larger than when these pictures were taken over two years ago. I don't think I can utilize the space for firewood storage. By the way the mulch you see below the roses is all byproduct of my splitting escapades. You probably don't produce this much bark mulch with your firewood processing, but I mostly deal with long dead zombie wood and the bark along with a good amount of rich organic matter flies off when splitting.

The house is in really rough shape, eh? That happened to the house next to me, the bank foreclosed, the pipes burst, it got moldy over the summer, and the some house flippers bought it for 195K, fixed it, and sold it for 378K. Seemed like a hard way to make a buck. If your town gets gentrified you could ride the wave but the timing would have to be right.
Your house looks great! How about a holz hausen on the front lawn? I've been following the discussion about them over here.Giving it a shot

Nice haul of oak! Quite the adventure getting it too. I’m glad it worked out okay for you. It’s too bad they don’t just set up an official staging area for wood that’s available. It would only save them time and money while benefiting the community. I can’t say I’ve seen it being done that way anywhere yet though.

I moved wood by flying saucer today! First a half rack of birch into the basement. Then black locust into the rack where the birch was. Then the oak out of the driveway into the rack where the locust was. Gahhh! Believe me, it made some kind of sense. IMG_20190222_3350.jpg IMG_20190222_49799.jpg
It's one thing the snow is good for.
