We have been in this old house since '96 and the basement has flooded about 5 or 6 times over the years. It typically would flood in the spring when the crick is a raging torrent, but it did flood one January after a big thaw and prolonged rain. We have a dirt floor basement and the water level is only a few feet below that, however when the water table rises significantly, the basement floods. Our foundation is field stone, around three feet thick and as far as I know, this is the second house on it. I'm not too worried about it as this old "barn" was built in 1904 and survived all sorts of stuff over the years. Some of the newer homes that neighbours built for a quarter of a million bucks (or more) will have a hard time lasting 50 years let alone a hundred. Plus, it's all mine, bats, mice, cats, deer, coyotes, fishers, foxes, ducks and lord knows what else, included. Oh, almost forgot the wife's chickens.
I took a small walk down to the Brook, it's chugging along pretty good but not even close to the highest it has been. Thursday is our heaviest rainfall day so we'll see what it looks like Friday and Saturday. I didn't see any downed trees in the Brook so if it stays open then it should handle the melt and rain.
Such a pretty brook. I think the remaining snow melt and rain, that thing will be moving good. Flooding potential in our area later this week as well.
My little brook is flowing good, it's nowhere near the size of yours. There was a Turkey walking along it this AM feeding.
It's not the highest I've ever seen it but the waters moving pretty good. According to NOAA, we received 10-15 inches of rain in the last 60 days.
We finally get a break from the rain on Wednesday and maybe even tomorrow. Hopefully it's not real bad tomorrow so I can do some trail work which would include the tractor for moving a sand hill. The trails are in excellent shape for all the rain we received.
"listening to the sounds of the water"... I was just thinking the same thing... that much water moving sounds awesome. Nice pics thewoodlands Zap...
We went for a long ride so we could check out certain areas with brooks or streams, the town workers are out keeping things flowing so I didn't take that many pics. The few pics that I did take are of the brook that flows through our property, tons of ice in the brook south of here that should make its way down.
Well, there are some who want to send it to some strange places. Hey, it took you a long time to quote that one!
Great pics thewoodlands , I have brook envy. Mine is only a couple of feet wide, except in heavy rains. I would like to see some pics of Dennis going down yours in a tube, once he feels better of course.
