I live in eco-nut Canada bud. "Treated" wood here means wood that's been sprayed with a weak mixture of water and green or brown food coloring so they can double the price. LOL.
Excellent idea, I've wanted to do this very same thing with a big cabin boat trailer that I have for years, just never had the time to do it. Looks great, blacksmithden! I can't wait to see it out in the field!
Woo hoo !!!! It's done !!!! I just need to stain the sides after things dry up. I even got the cover for the wood splitter (which also doubles as a step when you set it on the ground) done. The thunder just started rolling, so that's it for the day. Time to relax.
Nice! My brother n I had ideas of building something similar...only with a swinging crane/winch (like you see mounted on heavy equipment service trucks...I'm sure you're familiar) so to be able to pull logs right onto the trailer...then buck, split n toss right onto the trailer (or wherever) kind of a poor mans firewood processor.
Last night, I decided to pull the wheels and drums to have a look at the brakes. Good thing I did. When I pulled the drum off the left front, the friction material from the front shoe fell on the ground. Fortunately, it stayed in place until I did that, and it didn't mess up the drum. First thing this morning, I went out and bought new shoes, bearings and grease seals. I got the rest of the stain on it when I got home, and just finished fixing up the second wheel before the rain hit. By the look of the radar, it should only last an hour or so and then we should be ok for a few hours. I really want to get this thing knocked off today. Tomorrow, I want to get everything ready so we can go out cutting on Thursday. I'm so excited. No more piling saws and gas cans in the back seat of my pickup to leave more room for wood. I can't wait !
We're loaded up and ready to go tomorrow. I just have to hook up...throw the saws in the back of the truck....load up a cooler.....and we're off to cut up some tree carcasses. First trip of the year. Yay ! Here's some pics of the final setup. Inside the job box on the front of the wood gittin' trailer. The box mounted in the box of my truck The saws all ready to go. Husky 445E and 372XPG And finally, the splitter hooked up for a test run. Works like a champ.
Junior and I went out today and managed to cut and split 2 cords give or take a bit. The trailer weighed (empty) in a little more than I thought, so I figured I'd only fill it about 3/4 + or - full on this trip and weigh it. We couldn't have hit it any better. I'm good for a total axle weight of 7000 lbs and on the way home, we came in at 6974 lbs (26 lbs to spare). I'd love to say I planned it that close, but it was a complete fluke and nothing else. LOL. First load for the year complete - all lodgepole pine - 1 or 2 more loads to go and I'm set for this winter. I'll have to sort though this to see how much of it is completely dry. All of the trees we cut were obviously dead, but a couple of them seemed to still have a fair bit of moisture in them just going by the weight of the pieces. I'd rather go for an extra load, and set aside the questionable stuff for a year rather than line the chimney with creosote when the coldness sets in. Jackknifing it through the ditch to get up beside a tree I'd just dropped. I couldn't get the whole thing in one picture, so it's the front, and then a little pan to the right to show the rear.
Well done blacksmithden ! Looks like the setup is paying off. Certainly is nice to know the weight of the trailer with a load in it.
That has to be nice without the noise of the engine right beside you and no fumes blowing around. Nice job
