Fir a Ridgeline not being a "real truck " it sure does some things well that most owners would never do. Lol

I wonder, did they call an el camino or ranchero a pickup back then?

They were the Ridgeline of their day…

Except I don’t ever recall seeing one in 4wd unless some redneck modded it.

No idea, but, the definition of pick-up truck doesn't exclude vehicles without a traditional body on frame design. Its a vehicle with an inclosed passenger compartment and an open bed. In reality, the Ridgeline is a body on frame of sorts, as they took an existing unibody chassis design, and welded on a frame, made mostly of high strength steel. That high strength steel is what I was referring to in the other pm.

What most of the "not a real truck" crowd fail to grasp is this...many people don't need or want a traditional truck. They don't need to tow large loads, go off-road ect. We are those people. We get the benefits of superior ride, handling and comfort on the road over any traditional truck, with all the towing and hauling capabilities we need. We have owned many traditional trucks from the big three. Small, mid and full size. Nothing compares to the Ridgeline in comfort, ride and handling that we have owned and driven. If we need more truck capabilities, then we will chose something else.

I had a guy tell me if it doesn't have a low range transfer case and 4x4 its not a real truck. He was really agitated by us buying a Ridgeline to the point he said if I don't need a truck capable of hard core off-road or towing the tonnage he deemed acceptable, that we had no business buying anything but a car. Then he went on to blame "people like us" for the cost of vehicles that he can't afford. He had no explanation about whether a 2wd 1 ton dually was a real truck or not when I asked. I also offered to let him buy whatever car he thought we should drive. I'm still waiting. Lol

What I find odd is if we had bought a Pilot instead of the Ridgeline, I wouldn't have had a single person say, "that's not a real suv". Bunch of goofy peeps out there. :loco:

Be careful, thats not a real SUV....

It actually doesn't bother me. Lol. The majority of people are just effing around. There are some oddballs out there that seem to take offense to the existence of the vehicle. It's strange to me.

I have a buddy in another state that has a first gen Ridgeline. On his second one actually. He has had more than one dude come up to him in parking lots to explain to him why thats not a truck. Perfect strangers. Its bizarre.

I repaired machines at a roll form / stamping plant. At that time 84% of new vehicles on the road in north America had parts from that company in them. Bumpers, integrated hitches, side impact beams ect, ect. They have their own crash test lab at one of the facilities. When I got to play with the high strength steel vs regular steel I couldn't believe what I was seeing. Its very impressive.

The dodge dart was one of the first that i was trained on about HSS. They had a cut away chassis of the dart on display in auburn hills at the chrysler national training facility.

In the real world you can pick up the car by the rocker panels and they won't dent. Lotta guys would just kick hoist arms under um without even looking.

A roll form operator handed me a hammer and two identical pieces of steel. Identical in size, shape and thickness. Clamped them in vice and said bend them into a 90. Easy with regular steel. Impossible with the martensite steel and a hammer. It just made a ringing sound and vibrated a bit. I straight up wailed on it too. Lol.

I don't remember anyone calling those trucks. But they were basically modified station wagons - just much cooler.

Very few vehicles were 4WD back then. Even utility ranch/farm trucks were mainly RWD. Back then you learned to drive in the snow by going onto the school parking lot (or a pasture) after it snowed and doing donuts to learn how to control skids and manage your direction. You learned to drive in the mud by going out in the boonies to go fishing. My Torino, Ex's Pontiac Le Mans, and Ex's buddy's Falcon would do that on a regular basis.

Now you almost can't buy anything without at least AWD, if not 4WD.

You are correct, several of the old boys around here were fond of saying “ you can go anywhere in a 2wd that you can go in a 4wd. “

I did most of my fishing & hunting using cars or 2wd pickups, you just needed to know their limits.

I was taught to not engage the 4wd until it was needed, most folks I see today are engaging it as soon as the 1st snowflake falls or at the slightest hint of damp ground.
