Probably, look up its bolt pattern. I personally would not spend that much the HF motor and clones are all 6.5hp if the don't list it they now say CC due to that huge lawsuit years ago over HP wars. They also list torques I think??

Yes, cc's are listed for some, HP on others.

Looks similar to the engine on my Ariens 7524.. Very easy to pull start with that engine.. Never use the electric start and don't know if it works lol..

Ok, since Jon is already into this engine, lets figure out this crank. Jon, is it really scored or is it aluminum transfer? You'll have to look real close to determine if the damage is raised or recessed. If it's recessed, get a new crank. If it's raised, try cleaning it up with some Muriatic Acid, which should eat the aluminum but leave the cast iron crank unharmed. If you're ok with the parts cost, keep going with the engine you have at this point. You should wind up with a better quality engine than the Chinese replacement.

Also, even tho the engine says 7 HP, based on the pics provided, an 8HP L-Head type engine is going to be a lot closer in terms of power output than the small 6.5HP OHV type engines in Ray's links or the HF 6.5HP "Predator" replacement.

The engine in my link said 7HP.. I found the OHV was better on gas and starts much easier than the conventional 8 HP I sold..

As it should be, the OHV engine in your link is 195cc vs 318cc (which is my best guess for Jon's engine and typical for an 8 HP Tecumseh L-Head).

HP ratings for small engines are damm near useless unless comparing within engine families. Even brand to brand is a crapshoot.

I'll pull the flywheel and crank and look closely.

After I rebuilt the piston rings and set the connecting rod in place, I put the lower part around the crank and tightened the bolts. There was a bit of resistance, so I did not go any further. I think this means the scoring is raised. I got caught up in the holiday and haven't been back at it, but I will now. Again, thanks for the pointers.

It is most likely just aluminum transfer then. You stand a good chance of removing it with the acid and maybe using some VERY fine emery cloth to polish the journal.

The acid might do the job just fine and you would be polishing only to remove any discoloring left behind by the acid. I have a crank that I've been meaning to clean up myself. I should really get to that one.... lol.

Hope my 7-1/2 HP Tecumseh on my 7524 Ariens never croaks as this one has 2 output shafts (PTO).. These don't seem to be available so I'd be SOL.. The 8 HP Tecumseh I had was an L-head and also MUCH louder compared to the OHV engine too..

Hopefully parts should be available when it happens. I mean, these things are meant to be rebuilt and get a few more servicable years out of them...

There is a company called TecumsehPower products that bought all of the spare parts inventory and is making common replacement items available. Carburetors, coils, gaskets, mufflers and the like will all be available for quite some time yet. These days most snow blowers have switched to LCT (Chinese) engines and the more spendy models are using the Briggs snow engines.

My Cub Cadet self propelled mower has a Chinese engine and I put loads of hours on it and the engine runs great and has lasted for years..

So far so good with LCT. I haven't had to get a whole lot of parts for one yet. They are a bit more of a pain to do carb maintenance on but I don't think anything was easier to work on than the old Tecumsehs. They were loud and crude but kicked a ton of snow around for nearly a century!

Probably because they are designed to run in snow and cold and have no air cleaner..
