Sugar & Soft Maple

I had left some up top from the summer of 2013 when I saved this tree from the big rot, this was the worst of the a couple of nice size branches that came down, we still have another load which I'll get tomorrow.

I just drove by them all summer......had better stuff to get stacked.

Well Seasoned ....I'll be working more up top so I'll get my stacking area cleared again, when I started cutting we would keep 1.22 cord or 4 NY face cord up there.

Twice we caught a kid on our property up there, that's when I stopped keeping anything up top, I also chased him off once.

 

I think a few splits from the bottom might but they seemed good.

 

Good job. Most anything will dry out and burn if you get it up off the ground like that

 

Well Seasoned, since a few big azz Maples came down on our neighbors property which borders ours, he can't make it up on the small yard tractor.

Those Maples blocked his path, he also rides his dirt bike in our neighbors sand pit, he's not happy.

As I've got further ahead with my dry wood inventory, it has become more difficult to persuade myself to pick up soft maple that has been on the ground for a full summer. If I spent the same time/effort elsewhere I'd be further ahead in the BTU collection scheme. And every time I handle it from there to the stove I know it is less than ideal (and is very likely that way because I procrastinated somewhere along the line). My firewood time in the woods is 50% improving crop trees and 50% getting firewood - I've gotten to the point where I can easily tolerate leaving a gnarly trunk on the ground to rot and provide food for the chain. But I do hate having to drive past pieces of soft maple on the ground cut to length, and you would find in my stacks about two cord of less than ideal maple that went through a period of neglect.

Nice work with saving those maples. Makes for real nice firewood in my opinion.

I found some dead standing very small barkless maples this year that yielded, completely dry, non punky firewood. Do you have small dead standing maples you found? I didn't even split them since they were 6" or less.

Yes, the real wood dump is here at the house. We just don't have anymore good stacking areas around the house for the amount of wood that's down, the only answer is burn more wood!

I'm thinking about clearing an area back in on the property I cut on.
