So far the 029 has been great. I had borrowed my uncle's MS290 (basically the newer version of the o29) and instantly knew I had to have something similar. I found it on Craigslist back in August for a decent enough price. It needed a bar/chain and some carb adjustments but after that it has been a real workhorse for me. I still use my smaller Echo saw for limbs and small branches, but the Stihl is my go-to for anything 12"+.
wasnt me. Nice score. I was in Higganum and had planned on hitting Aircraft Rd, but ran into problems on the job so not enough time. She has more work for me so i WILL go there.
You crack me up man, always on the defense That locust is still there with your name on it. I go by it daily
buZZsaw BRAD I stand corrected.........AGAIN.........I actually split the wood today and it's 100%.....sugar maple!
I started doing wood with my Sienna minivan. I would bring a pop up tent (during rain) so that I could safely hook up my inverter so I could run two dual battery chargers. The makita 36v eats through batteries and I have like a dozen 5aH and it's still not enough. I hurt my back because I kept taking the middle seats in and out of it....and after hurting my back so bad that I was bedridden for 5 days I decided to get a pickup and thankfully found my tacoma back at the beginning of March. Here's a few pics of of the sienna in action bucking up some fallen trees right around the corner of my house at a school. I probably did that 4-5 times before I got the pickup.
This just goes to show that where there's a will, there's a way! I used to scrounge with a Chevy Venture, then I got an S10, but the ring gear is having an issue, so its in the garage until I can fix it. My vehicle right now is a Lincoln MKZ, so hauling wood is limited (not to mention a few weird looks). I kind of made up my mind to clean up my grove and get the wood from there (there is plenty of poplar and mulberry as well as some maple and spruce), but I do miss the hunt out and about and the ability to cherry pick at the tree dump when you find some choice pieces. FYI, I just caught the video in your signature. That is too funny.
Having a pickup has been way more amazing than I ever would have imagined. I don't need it or use it for anything that I would worry about getting wet so I 2 minutes after coming home with it I had to cut out the bolts holding the tonneau cover in because the plastic handles had stripped. I was thinking about getting one of those overland racks until I realized how heavy they were and that I wouldn't be able to carry but 2 rounds of wood with it installed. Now that I have a cargo unloader (harborfreight) it works absolutely amazing. I can unload a whole bed of splits or rounds in literally 30 seconds without, most of the time, even getting into the bed. Everything just rolls right off and any stragglers I can usually just reach into and grab. Yeah an MKZ is too nice to be hauling wood in it too often!!! Are you considering a manual tranny? I wouldn't have it any other way!
My S10 is an automatic, but I am looking for an older full size. Manual is definitely not out of the question. I'll have to look into the cargo unloader though. That sounds like a good idea. As a side note, I have hauled hay bales in the Lincoln. I used a tarp, but I found two small square bales fit perfectly in the trunk. Three if you use a strap on the lid.
Nice. What did you use only 2 hay bales for? Halloween decorations? Yeah the cargo unloader is great and it was only $37 including tax with a 20% coupon.
We have horses and goats. I go through about two bales a day. I had to go back everyday until my hay guy could make the delivery. I'm thinking of starting a hay hoarders club website.
I just started burning some Norway from the summer before last.. it sure does leave a lot of coals going. It’ll fill up my stove with coals, and I already used up most of my pine for getting the fire going.
Oh that's cool. Is that a bad thing or a good thing? I have an open fireplace so I don't really care if there are coals or ash.... Every other day typically I'll just scoop some out and clean it up a bit and put it in the ash can and then into a larger bin for use in the garden in the spring.
Mostly a good thing if the blower is still on when I wake up in the morning, and likely a sign of decent btu’s, but it would be better if I had some pine or poplar to burn them down before it gets too full.
Yeah I am seeing the light when it comes to the softwoods. Got 4+ cord of spruce and man that stuff dries fast, burns hot, and smells amazing when you split it. Absolutely am loving it. Also spotted a huge poplar tree out of the corner of my eye whilst driving around the corner from my house. Got permission to take it and that will be ready for next winter.
I keep reaching for the 028 instead of the Makita 36v.......I justify it by telling myself I'm still "testing" it out since I just got it. I'd love to find an 028 or 029 super fixer upper and get it back up and running.........
I think Norway maple must be the easiest wood I've ever split. Love how fast it dries and how uniform the splits come out.
Norway is common around here, but mostly an "urban" tree. Surprisingly its a rare score for me. Only a few pieces from the dump are all i got this year, I love splitting it as well
