In July of '79, we needed a cutting board, fast. ...so, I had some birch
and walnut and threw together this board. It has served us well for 40yrs.
It's coming to the end of the trail, though. One of the dowels I used to joint it is exposed.

    I built a new board, walnut/red/white oak/hickory/purple heart.
I like the end grain strip. It looks cool and adds to the stability and durability of the board.

I want to add some inlay strips, but have never done that.
So, need to learn and practice. Practice pieces are just common sugar pine from Lowes.
After creating a few, thought it was a waste to throw them in the wood stove.

    IMG_3062.JPG

So, I created another heart box. Brings a whole new concept to enhance a box.

Next project is to create inlays that match the design of the box.

Wow, I love it! Hearts tied up with string, maybe a lovers' knot! It really looks cool on the pine.

Wow! The shell is amazing! I can tell you're having fun working things out in pine.

It is a prototype box. It is going to be for my NIL. She is....besides a
doctor of micro biology, a math wiz. She loves the Golden Spiral. It is
a spiral that gets wider by a factor of pi for every quater turn.

And yes, it appears all over in nature. Really having fun w/this.

Would that be similar to the fibonacci number? I've been trying to read up on that for no particular reason. It just stoked my curiosity.

Yes. Similar in that in the Fibonacci sequence the
ratio between each pair of numbers is.....wait for it.....pi.

...so, the Golden Ratio is believed to create visuals that are pleasing
to the eye. After I got this all sanded and put it together the first time,
I just stood there looking at it. I was sort of transfixed by it.
Still really not quit sure what to think about this.
    Thoughts........

Got any more agates? Sink a few in this part, as well as drawer pulls? IMG_20200109_50120.jpg
Or woodburn a seaweed motif? Might as well go all out! And, round off any sharp edges that you can.
The drawers are very elegant. And the overall shape is very pleasing to the eye, you can't do better than natural forms.
    Success, I'd say!

Somehow got dropped of the notifications for this thread, so I'm a bit behind.

Love the grain and colors of the new cutting board. And those inlay strips - just awesome!

Looks like an elephant from the side, which I find amazing.

I just went through all 9 pages of this thread and don't see anything like the following. A guy came in the store who makes hats on his lathe from a solid block of wood. This one is maple and is 20200113_134319.jpg 20200113_134312.jpg amazingly strong. About 8 or 9 ounces. He sells them at 299.00 but they fetch up to 1000 in Texas. I suggested he move! If 20200113_134331.jpg interested I can supply business card
