Latest attempt to dress up my band saw boxes.
I don't really know what to think of this.
    What do you think?

Came up with a different way to cut the leaves.
Leave them attached to a runner. Scroll the veins on the leaf.
Then cut the shape on the band saw. Just have to rotate it on the runner
and make the compound profile cut. Do most of the sanding while it is attached.
    Much easier. Thoughts

I like the design! How do you plan to attack them to the box? Are the leaves very fragile? I would worry about knocking off those stems with wear and tear over time. I would like to see the leaves stained dark orangey brown. Also, if you used fancy tiger-grained wood for the leaves, to mimic leaf veins? Also, use a natural leaf as a stencil.

I was thinking the same thing. Maybe a maple red would be good too.

I like the addition of the leaves. A slightly darker color or different species would make them stand out, but not detract the overall look of the box.

    Variation on a theme.
Been having way too much fun playing w/these old pine beams.

    Created one w/a hidden drawer.

Also, experimenting with how they get cut out w/the grain.
    IMG_1501.JPG
This was cut at a 45deg angle to the grain

    This was a smaller scrap.

    I don't have a smart phone...so......
would really like to know.....would you use something like this?
If so, which one appeals to you?
Would really appreciate thoughts /ideas you have about these.
    Thanks!

I like the simplest one, the last picture. It would be useful on a desk, or on the table during a meal. It's not a "change my life" kind of item, but I would welcome it as a gift. I think that's your market, a unique handcrafted gift. You could cut a notch in the bottom lip to accommodate a charging cord:

I don't, but a lot of people use ear buds with their phones. The little shelves make a good place to stash them.
Check how tippy or skiddy they are with a phone propped up. Maybe sink a disc of metal or tile or something in the underside, to make it more stable. People really won't want anything that their phone will fall off of.

I think Midwinter hit it - last one, make sure it is heavy enough. Cut out for cord, or maybe a hole in the back to snake the cord thru

Just noticed something since I have 2 smartphones (personal and one for work)

That notch design will work for an iPhone, but maybe not so well for a Samsung. The Samsung plug is 3/4" wide. Of course I don't know the dimension of your notch, but it doesn't look quite that big in the picture.

Good point! My son and daughter in law have iPhones, I could cross-check the stand using their phones.

Cold, snow day. Good day to work in my shop.
Created my first roll top bandsaw box.
    Laminated 2x8 doug fir.
    Pretty straight forward.

Well first of all, the way you matched the grain really holds the eye. Were you able to line up the grain like that when you glue it together? I hope you can keep making it happen!
I like the design a lot. The interior looks big enough to hold a big wad of stuff. But the design only works as long as the curved sliding hatch opens smoothly! If the wood warps and the hatch sticks, game over. That said, the design is so attractive, if you can make it work, make a lot of them. They are more unique than the 3-drawer boxes you have made, and more covetable.
A little mineral oil for a finish?

I'm thinking since the roll lid is 4 pieces of wood (laminated), there shouldn't be any warping.

Very nice piece of work there.

My thought is, can't wait until you're retired full time so we can see more of these creations!
