It was pretty short and the other end was weathered. It fell apart. If I see any more, I'll try to save you a chunk.

Let the crack become the focal point of whatever you make of it.

bowls tend to crack pretty easy when the rim is near the pith.
i agree, live edges and cracks can really make a piece look neat 20181217_102043.jpg

There is still a lot of use with that piece. Just smaller...

Two of the spalted maple boxes are ready to go.
These are going to the lady that gave me the wood.
Sure would like to get some more of this kind of wood.

In an effort to get more use out of valuable chunks of wood, am trying
a new(to me) technique. Rather than make a box out of a solid piece of
beautiful wood, I going to try and extend the beautiful wood. ...so, enter The Resaw King.
I used my raw wood fence to cut a flat, workable surface on a log.
    IMG_1183.JPG

Next, drew a straight edge line diagonally across the log. Free hand cut the diagonal.
    IMG_1190.JPG

Now, with two workable flat, square surfaces, proceed to slice this up into workable pieces.
    IMG_1192.JPG
    IMG_1201.JPG
    IMG_1208.JPG
Cutting on the diagonal gives me a bigger surface to work with...
plus a different perspective of the grain.
These will become fronts and backs of a box w/some type
of filler wood in between. More to come.

    Thank you! It's fun.

I think you just have to start making saw dust.
Pretty soon, you'll be lying in bed trying to visualize
how to cut up that next box.

....may be surprised at what comes out of the abyss of your mind......
I'll see you on the road.

The birth of a new box.
Mixed in w/all the old oak I got from Singing Saw a couple of years ago
were some pine beams. Don't know where/how they got there. I cut them up
for fire wood. When I was stacking them, I pulled a few, just to have a look.
    IMG_1282.JPG

Turns out to be pretty nice wood. All heart wood. When I was using my Kindle
for my shop music, I needed some where to put it, beside lying on the bench....
so, necessity being the mother of invention, I created a Kindle stand.
    IMG_1251.JPG
    Worked very well.
Plus once I saw what I had in the wood, I quit burning it.
So, I thought about building some more of those stands
.....maybe for cell phones. I came across a box that had
a tray on top and couple of drawer......
and the desktop/cell phone box was born in my mind.

The open face for the cell phone really shows the grain on the pine.

....so, thinking of order of cuts....I jumped the gun on
cutting this box out. Once again, necessity being the mother.....
the drawer in a drawer box was born. I like it.
It is much like the hidden drawer, only in the front.

I coaxed another kitty out of a piece of gnarled chinese elm. I wish I would
have taken a pic before I started cutting. It took some careful 'cipher'n to figure
how to get this guy out..... As w/the other kitty, the "flaws" presented some new
challenges. Which lead to unorthodox methods to fix them.

Anyone can work in the pristine.....
but working in the flawed world is much more fun. .....and satisfying.

How do you cut the drawers out without cutting the whole way through? You do beautiful work
