My first complete puzzle box, w/hidden drawer.
    Laminated scrap 2x4 for practice.
It's not as easy as it looks.....but, w/practice......
    It does stimulate the gray matter. IMG_7396.JPG IMG_7397.JPG IMG_7401.JPG IMG_7404.JPG IMG_7406.JPG IMG_7408.JPG

That looks like it called for some whittling, in addition to your scroll saw? It would delight a young boy. Using unseasoned wood might warp all those close fits?

Interesting thread. Beautiful work. Here's what I found in a chunk of wood must have been drifting for some time. Washed up on the beach to reveal a perfect "hole in one". Someone out there is another Mickelson! 20180304_102224.jpg

    ...speaking of band saws......
Santa brought me a new blade for my Laguna. The Laguna Resaw King.
It is a total game changer. Designed to resaw exotic, very expensive wood....
very small kerf. It resaws irregular wood like butter.

Last summer I got some maple. Lady said is was removed because it was dying.
That means spalting. I cut up a few pieces to test the new blade. WOW......
The spalting process was well under way but the wood is still very much intact.
I roughed out a couple of boxes. Just amazed at what you can find in gnarly pieces of wood.

Built a pattern guide. Took a few trys at the guide arm to get it right, but it works well.

Very nice boxes. The last spalted maple I picked up was really nice. The tree had grown along a chain link fence. I ended up with about two feet of the base. Once it dried up, I sliced it up and the patterns looked like desert hills. Absolutely gorgeous. The bad part was I could put a fingernail into parts of it. Those parts did not take stain and finish well. Pretty much all junk.

I just picked up a new Olson blade, hook tooth, 3 tpi, raker. I had to look very closely at the set as it was barely discernible. Thinner kerf, less planing or finish sanding. I do like a slightly wider kerf as a lot of the wood I cut is crotch, burls, figured oak and hard maple. I can't spend the cash on real nice blades as I rough out turning blanks a bit. Maybe I need an aggressive raker blade for rough out and another for closer to finish boards.

Here is the set on the new blade. It should cut some nice, clean planks.

I also need to re-tune the saw as I was getting some drift.

That is the problem w/most spalted wood.

    I have some Olson blades. 3/16, 1/4, 1/2.
They are ok. I run the 3/16 in the phenolic rod guides.
    Really works slick.

What kind of saw do you have?

The kitty box is by far one of the most unique things
I have ever created. Chinese Elm....garbage wood.
I was just stunned when the finish hit the grain.
More than once, it came very close to going into the Lopi……
    glad I stayed w/it.

I kind of hate to see them go.....but there time has come.
Off into the world....hopefully to be used and enjoyed.
New designs and processes already clutter the work bench.

Write the story on the bottom of the drawers and dates of house build and box build with your dad's name and your name and this year. Will be a cool find years from now for someone. The story will make it more valuable and more likely to be treasured. Good job and like the idea of not sealing the inside to keep the smell.

We started playing with wood working just this year. Its really cool to take a big chunk of firewood and turn it into a useful piece.

You're right, the grain on the cat box is incredible. I looked at it and tried to imagine the branches coming out in all directions. So cool how you kept the cutouts for the drawer faces, to continue the grain of the wood.

I wish this piece of hickory hadn't cracked. I believe TurboDiesel could have turned a cool plate or bowl from it. IMG_20190131_111007601_HDR.jpg

I was cutting up some small limbs back in April '16. As I was picking up the pieces, this one caught my eye. Pretty neat to find a letter that clear. The other end was just blotched up. IMG_20160303_132745757.jpg
