That guy has some serious talent! Saw him and the central Ohio woodturners club at the Paul Bunyan show.
Rules....oh, no....there are no rules here. So, I scrapped the cutting board because of the red oak. So, what to do with it. From the abyss of my imagination, I saw the axis of the squares that build the Golden spiral. Sometimes it is the mere challenge of making something happen that is the real fun of it. I hope that some day, past my time here in space and time, a discerning wood worker will examine this box. What they will find if they look close enough are a number of strange anomalies. ...and I hope that they scratch their head and wonder .....why? .....and how?
Not quite sure what the issue was with the red oak in the cutting board, I liked it. But, you found an amazing way to use it.
That's awesome, but he is gonna need a much bigger block of wood if he makes me one!! Edit: $66.00 for a flat free wheelbarrow tire??
Finished the "new cutting board. Walnut/hard maple/hickory/purple heart. Custom to fit the left sink. Scraps are easily pushed into the right sink to be gathered for the composter. Kind of disappointed that the purple heart lost some of it's color w/the oil finish. I went w/the mineral oil. We shall see.
...so the red oak thing.... cells of the wood are too big. Can not be sealed completely to prevent trapping stuff. I found plenty of evidence that lots of folks have used red oak cutting boards for years …...and they're still here. ...but, once the seed is planted.....
Yes, Purple Heart will darken as it ages. Used to turn a lot of Purple Heart pens for Purple Heart recipients. Didn't like how they aged so went with purple acrylic pens for them. Like walnut that is not kiln dried, it will continue getting dark (more so if exposed to sunlight for long periods of time).
I finally brought the Golden spiral box to fruition. If nothing else, it is a unique box and I doubt there will ever be another one like it. It will head out into the world next week. Thoughts..... I really hope that some day.....way past my time here in time and space.... a discerning wood worker will examine this box carefully. He will find some very strange anomalies and scratch his head and wonder .....why? ...and how?
Yes. I don't date them but I sign them w/a custom branding iron. I thought is was kind of weird the first few times I did it.... but it has become very enjoyable to finish a piece and put my name on it.
Cold coyote calls. Caught this guy in the late afternoon sun.... setting on the coffee table in front of the wood stove....curing finish.
