There is always been some stray cats around here they don't bother me, but then again just because the cat is hanging around your yard, doesn't mean they don't have a home.
A couple of different times I found kittens hanging out under my deck I brought them in and found them a home .
I think most of the cats I see out here now do have a home and they are just over here hunting the mice in the wood stacks, which is great to me, my cat doesn't go outside unless I take him outside on a harness

I swear my wife has stray cat beacon syndrome. If there is a stray within 50 miles it will come to her and she will need to feed it. Our current critter showed up 2 years ago and hit the jackpot. He was skinny scruffy beat up and missing an eye. His name is now Willy he has a heated water/milk dish and a 2x3' square of 1"hdpe insulation that his food and water are on so while he eats he doesn't get cold feet.

A couple of months ago the same mother cat showed up with these guys, just this week she has found a home for all of the kittens but still looking for a home for the mother.
She took two of the kittens to San Diego to my other daughter for my grandkids.
Not a big deal she works for Delta Airlines so she flies for free

This time she took the mother cat to the vet and the vet gave her half price to get the cat spayed and shots, so no more kittens will show up.
Anyone want a real sweet female cat that has been spayed and shots??

I'd use some kind of trap, take it to a shelter if you don't want it around.
Want it around, put out some food

We have himalayan cats. I don't ever let them outside. I can't imagine killing a cat hat is looking for food. There are programs in this area that take in feral cats, fixes them as then places them as "barn buddies".
Feral cats are victims of reckless owners who were not responsible getting them fixed. Our human societies here won't place a cat that isn't fixed. Only deseased cats are destroyed.

A local shelter I use to volunteer at has a program like that called Trap Neuter and Return, it is a unique program, funded solely by donations.

You guys are free to come and pick up the never ending cycle of cats we get here. What happens to the cats, is the fault of the owner who abandoned it, not mine.

I took in a stray. I don't know how she survived. Nothing but skin and bones, most of her hair missing and had scabs all over her. She could hardly walk without stumbling. I have her food. She became friendly. I didn't take her to the pound as I was sure they would see her as unplaceable. I took her to the vet who looked her over. Said she was an older cat. Fixed. The vet gave her steroid shots. The cat slowly improved. At that point, I just took her in as here to stay. A couple years later, she got some three year shots. She rapidly went downhill and passed away in my chair. My dog woke us up barking when the cat passed. They were good friends. No more three year shots for my indoor cats. Don't really know why they need any when you consider they never go outside. I miss that old cat. For me she was an ice breaker. I liked dogs, not so much for cats. That one was different. We now have 3 adult himalayans and three himalayan kittens. Plus my two good buddy lads. I would find it very hard to part with any of them.

That is sometimes true but not always. Most times here they will head for a hole. Sometimes they come back out quickly but most times they stay put for a while then are very leery and stay close to the holes.

EDIT: On the rabbit population, just a couple nights ago we were coming home after dark and right beside the road an owl caught a rabbit and was trying to get in flight. He finally made it.

She used to hunt with both bow and rifle. Had to call it quits when the shoulders began messing her up. Even after surgery, too tender to take any recoil but she still does well with the .22. Actually I miss the times we used to hunt together.

We inherited an older lab when we bought our first home. The neighbor asked for her (we had 2 dogs at the time as well). That sweet ole girl lived on our hill for several more years, til she too succombed to a bad reaction to annual shots.

I'm surprised you dog wanted to share it. I have the keep the litter boxes where the dogs can't get to them. Don't care for cat poo breath!

2 years ago I had a stray show up that I was eventually was able to pet after a couple months and made it a shelter on my back porch out of a rubbermade tub and a ton of old blankets. I've got 2 house cats and figured this one (Smokey) could stay outside and take care of the wood pile. He made it fine over the cold winter we had, and got friendly enough that I could pick him up, although only for a few seconds and then I could feel his entire body tense up.

But, he started attacking my cats when I'd let them out in the spring. The final straw came when my 5 year old step daughter walked out on the back porch one day and was attacked by the cat for no reason. After that I'd let my Golden run him off whenever he showed up around the house. I felt kind of bad, but I could tell this cat was never going to be friendly to the rest of the family. After running him off for 3 months and he kept showing back up during the night, I finally decided that a .22 would take care of things. Luckily, about that time my neighbor started feeding him and made a place to stay at her house. That's also about the time Smokey had kittens, so I guess it wasn't a "him"! Anyway, Smokey never comes around anymore and has a safe place to stay. I'm glad, because I wasn't looking forward to shooting a cat.

Interesting. Growing up we had cats, and a year ago we picked up two cats. One is an indoor and one is an outdoor car. The outdoor cat keeps the mice population down and leaves them on the doorstep for my wife. Hahahaha.

About 5 years ago a feral cat found it's way into our yard. The dang thing was terrorizing our two dogs, and the kids were all upset. I had to go out and take a look, and that thing was vicious. I went and put on my work gloves and after about 30 minutes caught it. Good thing I had the gloves on. It went completely nuts when I caught it. The only thing I could come up with at the time was an empty diaper box. I put it in their and taped it closed. Yes I left air holes. The wife called the animal rescue which goes to the police station in our town after hours. They sent a cruiser by to get the cat. Most likely he dumped the freakin thing elsewhere. He really wanted nothing to do with it. Which I can't say I blame him.

This past summer, there was a huge orange tabby lurking around up in the woods. I could tell it wasn't one of the usual drop off strays by it's behavior. Didn't see it very often and when I did, it was just a glimpse. This thing was very stealthy. It kept screwing around with our stuff at night and messing with the chickens, so I decided it was time to go. When I finally caught this thing it was like an orange tornado in a cage. It was hissing and spitting and spinning around in a way that would make a bobcat look tame. It's tail was about 6" long and had a bloody red stump on the end. I'd hate to have been the coyote or whatever that bit it off. It was definitely the wildest, meanest cat I've ever encountered.
