since birth brother.... actually was watching a PBS thing not long ago that explained combustion as an chemical electrical reaction releasing radiation in the process.
A welcome reprieve, minus the germ incubation that may or may not occur. Hopefully I'll be mended up from my recent URI by then....
I can finally participate! Multiple pics because you wouldn't see all the splits. Row1, maple Row2, oak and more maple Row3, anything that would fit! Coldest night of the year tonight. Stay warm fellow hoarders!
Hope you get better quick man, have the wife rub some Vicks on your chest, but make sure you put it away, don't want to use that for lube accidentally
I was going to take a pic last night but by the time I got the puzzle put together, I had too much fire n smoke, it was a good tight pack though
Tonight's fill up... There's a nice big half round EW in the way back, and a smaller half log EW between the coals , all coals up front. All beech.
After reading a good portion of this thread, I decided to give the N/S way of loading a stove a try. It was 10 degrees out with moderate winds at about 35mph. I will admit, it was a nice looking fire, but way too much for my house. I mean dang, 87 degrees with the stove damped all the way down to just smouldering! So y'all know I wasn't wearing much at all! But it was worth a try to see what it would do loading N/S vs E/W. Over this last Friday and Saturday, the overnight temperatures dropped to 2 and 5 degrees outside with winds of 40 to 55mph here. I loaded a couple of 3" x 8" x 16" oak splits (4 year seasoned) and the house was still plenty warm at 77 degrees which held for about 6 hours with the damper open about a 16th of an inch before reloading. When I load nothing but hardwoods, the damper gets set at about a 16th of an inch open. For the softwoods and soft hardwood (poplar + cucumber) I'll open the damper to about an 8th inch. As a side note: the temperatures this week will make it back up to about 60 by Friday. With the way y'all load, I'm imagining all of you menfolk running around with nothing but a smile on.
I got 11 hours of heat out of that load. I rechooched before work this am and had a gooder amount of coals.
I guess I was so caught up in the heat of the night that I spaced taking a pic.............of the fabled N/S load while umm, yep!
