Im slow to enter this conversation but glad to hear all things pointed to you not having a chimney fire sask. I to see the flakes across my snow covered lawn from time to time. I actually noticed this last week and it was across my front lawn and driveway, of course deep snow is everywhere so it sure showed up! When I would grab one it would disintegrate in my hand and it didnt feel like anything when I touched it. My belief is that this is loose creo in the chimney that is being flushed out due to intense draft. Sorry if this has been covered, I tried to read all the above comments. No creo is good but the loose stuff is better than the stuff that sticks to the inside of your chimney. PS I also clean my chimney multiple times a year even though I burn dry wood and dont really have to, it just makes me feel safer.
