Mosquitoes aren't a huge problem here, but we don't like getting bitten. Biting flies are a bigger nuisance. No problems with them coming in the house, we're outside a lot though. I spray permethrin wherever we are in the yard and the flies and mosquitoes don't bother us at all for about 3 hours.

Buying the concentrated stuff is a lot cheaper than buying it diluted in the spray jug. I dilute a half ounce of it with water in a spray bottle and use it as needed.

Permethrin is supposed to be safe for dogs, but toxic for cats.

Mosquito Magnet. I'm tossing around getting one, but haven't decided yet. Mosquitoes are worst here after dusk, and we're usually inside at that point anyway.

A friend of mine has a few, and they work well for him. In addition, I was staying at a house a few summers ago where the mosquitoes were absolutely insane, and the landlord added a mosquito magnet, and it cleared things out in a few days. It was remarkable how well it worked, but I have no idea about long term durability.

Yes, but I'm careful where I spray and how wide of an area I cover. I don't want to kill all the bugs, especially the lightning bugs. I like seeing them in the evening.
I have a T-shirt on a hanger near the patio that I spray regularly and that seems to work well. Been meaning to get some kind of little flag to put up and use in it's place.
I think the permethrin needs to be sprayed daily to be most effective and having a cloth to spray it on that blows in the breeze seems to work well and I don't have to spray the stuff all over the place.

If I had a problem with mosquitoes coming in the house, I'd spray all the screens and outside window and door frames with talstar and be done with it. It's supposed to be non toxic when dry and has a long residual effect.

Trust me I'd love to, our cistern in the ground, under our living room/kitchen floor. I had the idea of cutting off the top of the existing to put a new plastic one inside, but then we would need new floors too LOL.

Pyrethrum is pretty not bad stuff. Less (or even non) toxic.

Pyrethrum is the non-synthetic version of Permethrin and is safe(r) for cats and swimmy things.

What is the difference between Permethrin and Pyrethrum?

One is made by nature, the other is made by man.

Put it elsewhere? If it was a not-so-good idea to put it there the first time, why not change that?

My 1000 gal plastic tank is in an insulated outbuilding. I have a heater in there, but as far as I can tell, it never ran last winter (it is set to come on at 35F). The temperature of the building never got below 43F, due to the "warm" mass of water.

I was trying to figure out how to get the water from tank on the truck into an above ground cistern, do you haul water or do you have a well?

I have a well. I have never dealt with truck delivery, I guess the truck does not have a pump?

This all makes better sense to me now :) No pump, just a 450 tank on my husbands pickup, we gravity feed to the 1250 cistern via a hose.

Regardless of what we do with our cistern, I am still jazzed about the low water alarm you posted about awhile back . We had company last year, the children flushed the rv toilet incessantly (unknown to us). All that flushing filled up the black tank that same day, so they used the toilet in the house that night and the next morning. Somehow those kids broke the ball cock assembly in the house toilet too.....burned up the jet pump :picard:. I do believe that scenario would have paid for the low water alarm several times over :headbang:

I can't state anything about long term durability, but I can say they work. I started using one this year at my place up north. We couldn't sit outside without mosquitoes trying to carry us away. I fired it up Friday night and there was about an inch worth of dead mosquitoes in the bottom of the trap when I shut it off Sunday afternoon.

Whether it will put a dent in the overall population remains to be seen, but it did seem to at least lure them to the other side of the yard, allowing me to drink a beer and sit by the fire in relative peace.

It saved my bacon a couple of weeks ago as well. We were getting critically low on water, due to unintended excessive water consumption. It warned me as it was supposed to.

Could you buy a little potable water pump to fill an above-ground tank?

Remember the movie Arachnaphobia? Replace the spiders with mosquitos, last night we could have made a horror movie here. We were up pretty late killing mosquitos that had made it into the house. We thought it wasn't that bad, killed a few that evening that we could see. Let the dogs out for one last potty, glanced at the ceiling after they came in :hair::hair::hair:

Permethrin arrived today. Windy here, so I did the best I could with the trigger spray without getting my eyes. I sprayed the worst area, the 16' window/sliding glass door frame and the screens. I now have drips and sprays on the windows, I don't care after last nights freak show!

I also ordered an indoor bug zapper this morning.

Off to the garage to coat a towel (thanks Norky ) after a short rest. Crazy thing?!? I recognize the smell of this stuff.
