I bought the 460 powerhead used last year and have not had good luck with used saws although it is running okay now as fixing them is not my thing.
All the new Stihl saws ive owned have been very reliable so the 461 would just be to replace it.
    Can the 290 be ported?
Can you recommend someone who does porting work?

I’d consider getting your 460 dialed in. If it’s in good shape and you have a good shop that can
Get it running right fir a couple $100 your why ahead if $1200 for a new 461.

I can’t tell the difference between my 460 and 461 during use unless one has a sharper chain. Why do I have both??? That’s another question..,

460 is running fine...now. Paid $40 for the powerhead with good compression. Came with two 20" chains. Aftermarket carb didnt hold up i had someone put in. Took it to Stihl dealer. He put tuneup kit into old carb which i luckily saved. With repairs and bars im into it for $400.
New 461 was a thought as ive had GREAT luck with new Stihls...3 in 30+ years. Not good luck with used.
Have fired up new 261 yet. Wanting to get full chisel chain for 20" bar.
Complained to ebayer i bought 261 from and he is giving me a $20 refund. It was listed as a 261C.
I think i caught your CAD Dakota Hoarder You didnt tell me it was contagious!

I think i remember you posting about it. Got a great deal if memory serves me correct. Im not well versed on Husky saws but just looked it up and comparable to a Stihl 440/441/ CC wise. Theres a pawn shop in the next town over. Ill stop every once in a while to check out the saws. Had a nice Stihl 260 back in late Winter, but wants "all the money" for them even though i haggle til im blue in the face. As im not a "chainsaw mechanic" i cringe a bit at buying used.

Nice saw. Great price. I've owned the MS261 for years and just love the it. I'm jealous you snagged it at such a great price.
    Happy cutting..............Woodchip

Thanks for the kind words Woodchip :salute:. I was going to pay full price back in April as a self birthday gift, but the tranny went on out Murano so priority of course.
Have yet to "take its virginity". Picked up a couple new full chisel 20" chains for it last week.
Welcome to the FHC btw. Great to have you here! :handshake:

Instead of getting the 290 ported, sell it. Then take that money, and the money you were going to spend on a port job and get a better saw. You should be able to find an 036 in this price range.
