I didn't know that was Stretch's last name ;-) . He ran dozer for a bit up on the Teflon Hills fire in 15. Maine cold is chilly, But, I guess I spent so much time on the coasts of Alaska that 100% humidity doesn't bother me. Also, We are ALOT moister here in the Copper Basin than y'all are . The Mentasta range really keeps your cold and dry locked over there. Whereas we aren't that far from The Sound. And The weather comes out of the sw quite often. Check this out. I recommend you get a couple GOOFY files. Madsen's, Wood's and Bailey's carries them. They are the easiest to learn how to chisel file with.
I just looked up goofy file in Baileys. It showed a saved edge. I just got a few of the from tree stuff.
I have a Mastermind MS441C-M. Incredible saw. 32” of full-comp RSC chisel buried in Sugar Maple. (Hard as a coffin nail....)
Yup. It seems like a lot. But once you've run consistently Perfect chains , you'll wonder how u ever got along without them. If you've got Goofy files. You can file a perfect chain. It does take some work, and there is a learning curve. But I lernt , so anyone can!! I use a smooth fallin wedge to hold the chain tight on the bar . And file from the outside in. Don't worry if you get into your side strap a little. Most chains I've broke , its the driver that breaks , not the strap. And I've filed and /or ground the neck out of the straps. Never let the corner come out on the top of the cutter. Either perfectly at the corner of with a tiny beak. I generally run about a 28° angle. But anywhere from 25 - 30 ° is good. I use a Carlton File O Plate to do my depth gauges.
My favorite filer are/were Oberg . they had a rounded side ( radiused) like a goofy file. The Double Bevel files were good when new. But the point of the files teeth would break and/or dull fairly quickly. Then the file wouldn't cut worth a hoot. The radiused side of an Oberg or Goofy file lasted a lot longer. The 3 cornered ( actually 6 corner) files would put up the most awesome chain. But are the hardest to master. They are the best for getting the gullets out while sharpening also.
nothing against the monkey but check out "hotsaws101" utube ..... I believe he offers 3 levels of porting ..... he is famous for his Insane-0-ized zip kit .... check out his channel to see what's what .... real straight - shooter always answered email texts etc ; He did a saw for me and I'm VERY pleased with it .... hope this helps ya !
241 c insane-0-ized with an off the shelf ps 63 vs 261c muffler mod ; modded combustion chamber and squish at .020 ... the 241 is 42cc and the 261 is 50cc ... 8cc is quite a bit to overcome in a piston-ported 2-stroke .... had the 241c been sporting a Razer sqr/sqr chain like the 261c was it would have spanked it even worse
The 241c had a stock ps63 ; the 261c (built by yours truly) was sporting a ps63 sqr ground Razer chain
Will do, its rural where I live. Town has one cell tower next tower is 150 miles. The phone tag is normal here. I am out of cell between 16-18 hours a day.
What I am looking for is the saw that stihl would like to make if the epa was not all over them. It has to be reliable but fast.
I'm pretty sure stihl pro saws can get 2000hrs out of them stock before a rebuild ... a muffler mod and sharp chain will give ya a noticeable increase in cutting speed and with the right mix might give ya 2000hrs + ..... u can cut ALOT of wood in 2000hrs ! Most guys that port saws like to do brand new ones because everything's is new ... however the longevity depends on the builder and most wont by guarantee their work.... you can get a husky deflector and your chain ground sqr/sqr on the cheep ! Will it be as fast as a "ported saw" ... no ... will you gain 20-30% faster cutting with this set-up ? Yessir ... if ain't enough u can always getr done !
