I went to buy a 3/8 for my chain. But the guy at the store looked at my chain and said it’s 3/8”p. (P for pico) so that’s the one I needed. Confusing

Yes it is somewhat confusing along with how Stihl lists their chains in their catalog, just trying to figure the pitch’s and gauge needed just look at page 62 of Stihl 2020 catalog and tell me how easy it for someone new to chainsaws can fine their chain or just the chain there saw uses.

And don’t think all Stihl dealers understand it and if they really care to take the time to explain it to someone, you’re on your own.

A multitude of different bars and chains can be run on each saw though. It’s best to look at your own and identify which one you have. Or take it into the dealer and let them find a replacement

Thats the quick and simple way but what i think "i may be really wrong about this" is for the forum to help people understand how to obtain the needed imformation on their own.

And what i have found at dealers and not just Stihl dealers you had better have a good idea just what you want, example you want a new bar for your saw they will sell you what bar size they have in stock, and off you go is it really going to do what you want good question.

all the chain info is stamped on the bar. This info can get worn, so it’s best to write it down for future reference. Record the # of drives also
When you go to the dealer, tell them what chain you want ie RS 3/8 pitch .50 gauge 84dl

Yep that’s true. In order to do that most folks would need to educate themselves as to what’s available that might do a better job for their style of cutting.

I am not sure as there is nothing in the Stihl catalog as to what their 2 and 1 sharpners sizes are, and as to what chains they can be used on, but as far as i have found there is a 3/8 pitch one and a .325 pitch one, if anyone knows of others please inform me.

Well, you need to know exactly what chain you are running. You go from there.

    From pferd's catalog

Note the fine print at the bottom of the chart

Stihls version is a little more simplistic for nomenclature

Edit, I'm sure the files have the size stamped into them.

    Here they are:
Sharpening files - CHAIN SHARP - CHAIN SHARP CS-X chain saw sharpeners - POP packaging - 1/8'' CHAIN SHARP CSX w/ Round and Flat Files | PFERD Tools

Use the pull down to select the size and then it will tell you everything you need to know about that particular model under Technical Information on the left side.

Also take note the 3/8" pitch ones use a slightly smaller 13/64" file. This is correct for Stihl chains, but for Oregon (Husky) chains you should swap the round files to the correct 7/32". It's easier said than done.....although it's what I did. You have to ever so slightly enlarge the holes the file slips into to, as they are a tight fit.

If you buy the one that has 7/32" round files, it will be for the incorrect .404" pitch chain.

That is some really good imformation and i thank you for posting how to reach Pferd file data.

But what many are needing to know is about buying a Stihl 2 in 1 Sharpner, i understand the need to know the right file sizes needed as to the chain you are wanting to sharpen.
    ======
After doing some searching i found the imformation needed on the Stihl web site.

There is also a dropdown on Stihls web site for the 2 and 1 that tells you what units file sizes are needed and the right 2 in 1 sharpner needed.

They are identical to the Pferd versions, except blue and are cheaper because you are not paying Stihl's mark-up for re-badging the exact same product.

Sounds to me that's a good excuse to NOT buy the Stihl versions.

The Stihl's are only around $40 so how much are you saving buying a Pferd ? for $27 a BIG $13 dollars, then you have to pay for shipping and then waiting for it to be shipped.
Sounds to me a good excuse NOT to buy the Pferd Knock Off of the Stihl 2 in 1.

I don't know where you are getting your info from, more than likely you are just assuming. Pferd MAKES THEM FOR STIHL. They are NOT knock-offs. The are the identical product, made in Germany just like your orange colored Pferd is. The one you have is more Pferd than it is a Stihl.

There are Chinese knock-offs out there, but the Pferd is not one of them and is a well known and respected company who has been around for many, many years. I have the name and cell phone number of the contact I called from Pferd who can answer all your questions about the Pferd CS-X/Stihl 2 in 1. I called him to ask him a couple questions about the round file sizes in the 3/8" pitch model. Since this was a joint venture between Pferd and Stihl, and Stihl uses a 13/64" round files for their 3/8" pitch chain, their 3/8" pitch models of the Pferd CS-X/Stihl 2 in1 come with 13/64" round files. During our conversation he specifically mentioned how Stihl has more name recognition than Pferd does and how selling the same product under the Stihl name benefits both companies. It allows Pferd to sell more of them and for Stihl to make a cut off of the orange colored/Stihl branded ones as well. He went on to say that there are people who will buy the Stihl version over the Pferd version simply because of name recognition. I kinda laughed and told him how I know the Pferd name and know they are a well known/respected tool company. I guess I just found one example of what he said. :picard:

I paid $33.90ea shipped for my four Pferd's. The orange paint is not worth the $6ea..besides, I'm more of a blue guy myself anyway.

    What's a Perf??

I am happy you saved all of $5 dollars from what i paid, what can someone get today for $5 bucks?
I knew Pferd got their files from Vallorbe but i never did a lot of thinking about Pferd myself.

Two different companies. One's German and one's Swiss.

I find the 2 in1 does not do as good of a job when you get toward the end of the chain life.

I was wondering about that. I'm thinking it may not clean out the gullet very well??

I'm just starting to use it now on a chain towards the end of it's life, however I kept up with the raker depth, etc the whole time with one of the Husky file-a-guide things. I like them, but the stupid plastic rollers wore out too fast which then caused the file to go too low into the cutter and not correctly file the top plate of the cutter.

In case anybody is looking. This is about the best price around (free shipping too) for these CS-X/2 in 1 files. They also include TWO replacement files for every one you buy as well for free. Wish I would have found this before I bought mine.

13 dollars is about 30% less. That's a big deal for the same product. Also, the pferd is not a knock off of the Stihl unit. The reality is that the Stihl is an overpriced version of the pferd setup. Remember, that pferd makes the Stihl 2 in 1 file.

    Shipping can be free;)
