I have a ms200, which is the rear handle, and it's a terrific saw and I haven't done anything to it other than remove the spark screen. Haven't run a 201 but SAWMIKAZE seems to know his stuff and what he says makes sense based on me reading comments on these for years. Also, based on years of comments, the 200, to a lot of very experienced saw people, seems to be one of those rare saws that has something 'special.' Like, 'they just got this one right.' IMO, the Stihl 200 and Husky 346 have that type of cultish-producing reputation for excellence. Also, the 200 proved itself for gazillions of hours up in the trees, in very demanding daily pro work.

I'm not saying I dislike 200s, some guys just blow their performance out of the water. They cut no faster than the new 201s, I suppose someone could say that's just my opinion..but I have enough time with them to know what they run like. 200s sound really fast, it's deceiving. Plus removing the screen on a 200 is basically doing a muffler mod with another port..do the same to a 201 and abra cadabra.

I agree with you. When the 200’s came out they were the best top handle ever. I used them until the 201 came out. Stihl makes the best top handle saws.

The 200’s are certainly one of those saws that urban myths get built upon. Not saying they’re not a great saw, but when the tree guys start claiming they’ll cut with a 460 I quickly lose interest in what they have to say. Surprised they can keep a cigarette hanging off their lips with so much bullchit spewing out of their mouth. Then to top it off when I tried to buy one in a rear handle version the dealer claimed they were so powerful that you needed to be a certified arborist to buy one. I looked him in the eyes and said I use my 460 and my brothers 660, in pretty sure I can handle a 7 lb saw. He insisted so I left and never went back. The price even then was like $700, which seemed awfully steep for such a little saw.

Years back i had an OPE dealer tell me that when i looked at a top handle. Too many idiots not being safe one handing them.

I am very satisfied with the Stihl 194t. Enough for me. I haven't tried 200, but from what I've heard, it's not very popular. Here is a nice video on this topic:

Welcome to the FHC bestadam :handshake: Great to have you. Ive since purchased a used 201tch to compliment my 194. Nice to have a back up as the 201 had a log dropped on it and has yet to be fixed.

200 is a legendary saw among arborists. Never have used one. I suppose if a screaming deal came along id buy one, but most sellers of them know their worth.
