I didn’t see any o ring by the bearing or seal or in the bushing but I think there was one in there at some point. What sealant would you recommend?

Being that I work with bearings every day, yah that one's toast.

I was pretty suspicious of it when I noticed that outer ring was in several pieces. :D

Anything. Motoseal, silicone. Even grease will work

From my phone the outer ring looks fine, but that nylon cage (rolling element separator) is roached.

Can you read the bearing size on the outer ring face?
I might have one on hand.

Edit.. Bit of research shows it as a 6202. I'll look at my inventory.

I use 6202 c3 Nachi bearings for the flywheel side. Only about $5 each for a good quality Japanese bearing. The clutch side is proprietary. Get it through your dealer. And get a complete stihl gasket set including the seals.

When seals really go bad like that, bad main bearings should be suspected.

    It’s a Stihl proprietary bearing.

Try contacting the OP directly ( backhoelover ) to see if he will send you a pdf of the ms440 manual .
I thought if you clicked on the orange link I provided that it would take you directly to the post you needed , sorry . I have the pdf in my ipad , but being inept at using it , I can’t find a way to post it here ... :headbang:

My dealer charged me like $14 for that clutch seal which I thought was kinda high.

Get a price from your dealer on a complete seal and gasket set.

Seals alone are like $30, but I've heard the complete kit is cheaper and includes the seals

Well that makes me feel a little better. When I had him price it he said “It’s a little high..”

Depending on the series and current pricing, oem gasket kits are the way to go. I paid $43 for an 1122 kit a few weeks ago. I’ve paid as low as $25 for other series. Avoid aftermarket case gaskets for 1128 saws... they had a bad run and you need to be careful to not buy the bad ones in a kit (dont trust pics).
Some AM bearings are “ok.” Those above could be fine, but I would price out the Stihl clutchside bearing at your dealer ($35ish?). Nachi or other brands on the fw side are usually ok. Any saw you may sell should have oem parts in the important areas. Don’t pass on problems to the next person.

I don’t plan on selling it anytime soon and if I go through the effort of rebuilding a saw, I want it to be right. I just ordered bearings and seals from the dealer and he was thinking around $50 for everything.
