Scenario 1- You have a 5mm recoil and a 4mm case half (unlikely for your situation). Options are- drill and tap the case to 5mm OR drill and timesert to 5mm. I’ve done both.
Scenario 2- You have a 4mm recoil and a 5mm case half. You can carefully remove the brass inserts of your recoil, drill out, and replace with 5mm inserts from Stihl. I’ve done this before as well. You would need a 5mm chain brake screw with bushing if you go this route. The bushings are tough to remove from the screws.

    Oops hahaha.

Btw this is the area that is different above the chain brake spring. You can see the 036 case in this picture (same as 360) has no extra bit of material like the 034 Super.

I measured the hole in the case and it was 4mm. I guess you're saying the ms360 has 5mm holes in the case.

Correct. Not a deal breaker, though.

I found this pic from Jul-30-2021 and sure enough there's a crack in that spot in the case for the hand brake mechanism pin.......so it was just a matter of time before it failed.

Got the MS360 case. A few differences that matter. The case has 5mm holes for the starter cover as BuckthornBonnie predicted whereas the 034 Super starter cover has 4mm rivets. The 5mm bolts won't fit so I drilled them out, used a 1/4" bit, enlarged the holes freehand, then bought the correct 5mm rivets (thanks for confirming the part # 9416 868 6530@BuckthornBonnie). That was actually a pretty satisfying excercise. Moved everything over and had to wait a few days for the oil pump line to arrive. I'm glad they give you extra because I always seem to mess up the first time.

The other difference is the plate that goes in between the gears for the bar tension mechanism has an entire loop missing on the MS360 so the old plate wouldn't fit. I tried bending it instead of fishing around for my dremmel and broke it.......so lesson learned there. The old one would have worked if I had a little more patience.

034 Super muffler, cylinder, air filter covers, handle, and everything else had no fitment issues and required no extensions on the exhaust. I also ended up using the crankshaft, connecting rod, bearings, and seals that came with the MS360. They felt fine to me with zero crankshaft wiggle and felt nice and smooth.

Saw started with zero issues, oils properly, and cuts properly. Extremely happy to be able to bring this back to life......again.

Noodled a bunch of big white oak rounds to give the saw a nice warm up and it performed great with the 24" sugihara and Oregon lgx chain.

Not impossible - but most won't have the equipment to do it. (Class D extinguisher)
