Stihl 029 Super to 039

I was planning to replace the seals anyway on the 064AV. This confirms it.
And tank plastic was broke at the upper AV mount. There’s also a hair line crack on the tank itself. Maybe shopping to replace that too.

 

Does that crank have any play in it?

Aside from the seal leak, do you see something that makes you think it would have some play?

 

Waiting on the seals to be delivered, I did some cleaning double and checked the bearing play since BuckthornBonnie asked the good question. Still negative on play and run out looked fine by eye, both sides. And also dumped some cycle mix in to move and get some cleaning. After sitting for an hour or so, I found one of the crankcase connectors leaking.
Was able to get a quarter turn on it with out a lot of effort.

 

I always suspect older saws to have bottom end issues. Seals that leak badly can be caused by bearing issues. Additionally, Stihl 1122s (and many other saws, really) are known to spin the pto bearing in the case. That steel insert in the mag casting can come loose. That would obviously create an air leak that can’t be solved with a new seal or bearing.

I don’t see that in your case (ha), but just wanted to make sure.

 

Take a pic of the bearing once you pull the seal. It’s probably fine, but I always look closely on these saws.

Spinning with no seals

 

Flush the case out with mix and take a close look at the cage for cracks. They seem ok from pics.

After they’re clean, oil em up and give em another spin while holding the connecting rod. Grab both ends of the crank and wiggle- any play is bad.
