The vent line is just to relieve any pressure build up in the fuel tank, while trying to prevent the actual fuel from coming out, correct?

This looks like the echo vent. 2 for $6 shipped. I think that will work.

Sorta, yah. Air needs to actually come into the tank with no fuel coming out. Some designs allow for air flow both ways.

The air/carb box of 028s may be a little tight for the Echo style. I put one in one saw but routed a longer line and found a spot for it.

The line that was in there actually went out of the carb box and was in between the two plastic covers....Just venting to the outside air.

Ah so when the carb sucks up the fuel there's replacement air instead of creating negative pressure, yes?

Yep. The problem is the size of the Echo vent fitting into that tight space. Some will fit, others require a different route similar to a ms250 vent (longer tube connecting to an Echo-style vent).
Grub screws oem style will fit, but the Echo style has been better for me.

Got some carb cleaner and starting fluid along with 2 quarts of Stihl motomix today.

Used an old toothbrush and gently cleaned it out. Came out pretty good I think. This will be my spare.

$10.99/qt for the starting fluid. Thieves.

I meant for the Stihl Motomix. Sorry. But the starting fluid was $3.75 so it's still a rip off.

I have never seen that jerry can, that is cool, I think I will buy one!

Yep, 5 gal of mixed fuel is way too much for most of us, that is a lot of chainsawing!

Aw yeah I love the 5 gallon one. It's quite heavy but it's damm sturdy and I've had it for a while now (8 years) and couldn't be happier.

Not only functionally cool but looks sexy too!

Are you missing one of the hold downs on the air filter? I believe there is soposeto be 2 of them where they screw onto the carburetor studs.

There are 2 screws. But the other screw is on the orange plastic cover. You can just barely see it at the top of this pic.

Thanks for all the feedback on fuel consumption. I bought 2 of the Stihl Motomix quarts. That should do me good for a while. Of course, this all depends on if the thing will start once I get the new parts in there.

I'm betting it will, it looks like you've got decent mechanical abilities for sure. If it was mine I'd wait on a new bar etc. till you get it running good. Those are solid old saws for sure. Enjoy.

Yeah I got pretty excited and ordered the bar and chain. I think the guy is sending one of them fancy new carbon steel carbide tipped chains.......receipt says "74 DL .325 chain"

Worketh hard, do thy research, have a little patience, and don't be shy to ask questions........and ye shall be rewarded accordingly.

GOT THE 028 WOOD BOSS RUNNING BABY! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOO HOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!

    Now, a few things........

The air filter I got has an extra nut on it - on my saw the nut is part of the cover and extends through the air filter to screw into the posts holding the carb. I decided to reuse the old filter.

They screwed up my order and only sent me one fuel filter instead of two. I also received 2 oil caps instead of 1.

I decided to leave the existing impulse line. I don't even know what an impulse line does but it looked like it was in good condition so now I have a spare impulse line.

It took a few pulls to get 'er going the first time but when it snapped, popped, and crackled, there wasn't a soul within 1000 miles who was happier I tell you!

It seems to idle a little low....so I'm going to watch some videos on how to tune the carb. Any suggestions are helpful. There are two screws - H and L on the right side above the handle.

Here is the video of the saw running.

    VIDEO LINK

Here are some pics. Can someone verify that this is how OEM Stihl parts are packaged? I believe it is since the oil caps read "STIHL" on them.....but who knows these days.

Cleaned out the carb chamber area with some carb cleaner and a flour sack rag. Made sure to cover the intake hole. New vent line on the left. Only had 1 of those screws.

    2020-11-03 15.49.55.jpg

Here's where the vent line sits. The screw is on the left side of the hose.

    2020-11-03 15.50.14.jpg

Here's the new air filter with that second nut I don't need on the right. You can see the old filter in the next pic does not have it.

    2020-11-03 15.54.00.jpg 2020-11-03 15.54.06.jpg

    New spark plug installed.

    2020-11-03 15.54.46.jpg

A little concerned that this isn't the right bar for the saw. Of course the pic is a bit shiny but if you look closely it says 024, 026, 029.........but no 028!!!

    2020-11-03 16.11.29.jpg

New chain. Looks like it was cut from a reel.

    2020-11-03 16.11.37.jpg

New chain on the left, NOS chain on the right. First difference I noticed were the holes in the drive links in the new vs the channel in the old.

Also, the tooth on the old blade is a tad bit longer, maybe 1mm or .5mm.

The grooves and holes in the drives are for moving oil. Just a change of design.

LordOfTheFlies . Good job. Saw sounds good in your vid. Idle seems good. From the looks of the sticker on the clutch cover I don't think that saw was used much. I think the new bar should work. Just compare it to the old bar to make sure all holes are the same.
