Square filing chains

What saw were you using there.

 

My 3120 for falling and taking the butt log off. Then my 394 /36" for the rest of the limb and buck. I should have taken a 2' long short butt off it. But the outfit didn't pay for short butts . Boss was really mad about the conventional face. When I explained how I thot it would be a snag and a riggin cut when I put the first face cut in, he let up. I had had some big cedars in that strip that just ragged out when they hit the ground.

 

I ran the chain I had chisel filed today bucking a load of fire killed spruce I took to a guy this morning.
26" ( bar full from dogs out) of tempered hard white spruce. The 572 , 8 tooth sprocket almost Dropped thru the cuts. Even I was impressed.

 

How do you like the overall quality of the Carlton chain ?
That's a nice looking file job and picture taking .

Does Carlton chain stretch out very much. That used to be a problem with it.

 

I didn't notice lots of stretch, not as much as LGX. And it hold an edge pretty good, I'd say longer than LGX and EXL. Not near RS though. I like it.

 

I haven't filed a square chain in awhile, last time I had the top angle off on one side. Clamped bar in the vise and guess I had the chair in the right place...lol...
I think this is the best I've ever done.
28" bar, semi-skip, rakers filed to .035 with WCS file gauge. I think The Wood Wolverine would approve...

I was always too paranoid to clamp my reduced weight bars for fear of knocking a piece of resin out.

 

I was very careful. I had 2 pieces of cardboard taped to the jaws before. Guess they got lost.

 

First attempt at square filing. Converting a round rs to square. Maybe a little more forward angle on the side cutter?? What do yall think?

 

Pretty great first attempt IMO! Now the big thing is repeatability. The forward lean of the side plate just helps with self feed. You look to be at 90 so tweak that if you feel the need.

 

Sweet!! I can get the corner of the file in the corner of the cutter pretty good, I'll just have to work on how much i twist my wrist to get a good side plate angle. The angle of my side plate is what i can tell is verying.

 

Off to a good start.

 

I've gone and done it. Bought my first loop of 84DL square ground 72CL chain and a Pferd double bevel file. Gonna jump in with both feet. I'm going to use the new chain as a reference and see if I can convert one of my full chisel round file to square. Pictures of the mess to follow. LOL!

Hi Guys -

Holy smokes, I suck at this. I've got the pferd double bevel file and I don't understand how to get the corners to line up. When I look at the cutting edges of the file, I don't understand which part of the file is creating that corner...

This picture is how I "think" the file is supposed to sit in the cutter... It doesn't show the angle of the file relative to the tie straps. the cut corner I'm getting seems to be coming from the lower part of the bevel. If I change the file so the corner of the bevel is lined up with the corner of the cutter, that doesn't work either. Its good thing I'm practicing on a full house chain, cuz Im running out of cutters to practice on.

 

Top part of file goes under the top plate, top corner sits in the point of the cutter. I have the same file. When I get home from vacation, I'll try to taken some pics, unless someone else shows up.

here are a couple of cutters I tried... FUGLY....

I was originally was trying to sharpen from low-high (inside of cutter to outside). I tried going the other direction, outside of the cutter to the inside (high to low). By doing that I THINK I was able to see better what the file was doing. If I'm getting this right, the small portion of the bevel should be cutting the side plate, the larger flat part of the file should be cutting the top plate. The corner between the small bevel and large flat is what should be in the corner of the cutter.

Do I have that basically correct?

I think what I was doing on my first attempt, was my file angle was to shallow and the small edge of the file was not cutting the side plate, even though I had the corner of the file lined up. It probably isn't helping that my first attempt is a round file chain that I'm trying to convert.
