I want to thank mdavlee and SquareFile for there contributions to this thread. I started to square file a few weeks ago. I am on my 3rd chain and have had very good results with the first 2. They sure do not look like yours but they cut well. These will be work chains. I have been filing corner to corner and I get into the strap pretty hard. From what I read this is fine. Out of the 3 chains the first was factory square, the second was full chisel round and this one is semi chisel. The semi seems much harder to file the top plate, working corner and side with one file angle. Any tips on what angles to use?
Cut4fun has mentioned it being done to 3/8 lp before ps came out. Curious to where you'd put the corner.
The corner is coming out smudged. The corner is not getting crisp. I worked on it for and hour last night and could not get it right. The top plate was not getting sharpened at the angles I was using. I had to drop the angle down and the corner wasn't getting crisp. I think I have to take the cutter back more because the working corner seams to be thicker. Or maybe semi won't be any good to make square.
Ive thought about filing semi square but just didnt see a benifit. I think Ill try for myself just to see it.
Could this be done with a square diamond blade on a standard chain grinder or are the angles too complex?
I accidentally sent some Woodland Pro semi chisel to to be square filed. It's came out "interesting", but it chews through wood like and angry beaver.
On a standard round grinder the wheel comes to the cutter. On a square grinder the cutters comes to the wheel. The answer to your question is no.
I'm getting interested in square filing again. How is this looking? I know the gullet needs cleaned up.
Go ahead and run it . You're a tad low on the corner ,but it will still cut . It will just likely dull a bit quickly . Make your adjustment on the next sharpening session .
I only did one on that chain. I did another one. There is a little chrome on the side that got pushed over. I should have taken a wire brush to it before taking a pic.
