I can see only a little left on one. Maybe you already did what I was thinking. Oh not talking about cutters either. That last chain I filed I did none of this stuff too. Wanted it to look like a stock chain to those with no clue. Sent the chain to a build off for 3120 with 9T ( I think 9). Wasnt the fastest this way but wasnt the slowest either. I was ask if it could be used on a stock 3120 at real racing events in stock class after build off. The chain got 2 1st at 2 races. 2 for 2. What I am getting at is I have had chain that looked full freaking awesome race ready with all the crap done to them. Yea they looked great but cut like a slow floating turd. They then became cull gtg chains being 3 or so tenths to slow for real racing.
Some chains you put a ton of work in for them to be slower than one you just filed the teeth and went with.
No doubt there... Cobey came over last night to drop a saw off and we discussed chains.. Seems it's easy to overlook the simple things. Like get the corner of the file into the corner of the tooth! That's job #1. And don't touch those rakers till ya run it..
I got bit in the arse by leaving rakers alone on the PS3 chains. I will never send out any chain again without taking the time to at least check the rakers, no matter what chain or what saw. It stinks not having the saw that the chain will be run with, and its a hard guessing game trying to set a chain for a saw you don't have. Back to your pics ............ you clipped the trailing edge of the cutters, lost the side beak, polished the outside cutter walls, thinned the rivets and straps even more, polished/thinned the inside of the rakers, and got a manicure ................... what else did I miss Hedge ? I was wondering if drilling or rifling the drivers would help any ?
I didn't do any of that chassis stuff... That was Jasha's chain from the chain race last December. He didn't want it back. All I did was file the cutters back a bit keeping a straight profile, and smoothed the front of the rakers. It cuts pretty well. I need to run it against my chain that won on the 562. Then we'll know for sure if what I did to it made a difference.
AaahaaaAA ........... Next chain race I am getting a manicure, then I'll do better !!!! Seriousely, thank you for putting up more pictures, and details of your efforts. Lord knows I need all the help I can get to catch you & mdavlee
Had a guy come through from out west in spud land. I loaned him my piped 5000 to use in 3ci piped class at a SC race minus chains. I couldnt run my saw with that guys chains whatsoever. His chains just self pulled right through the wood without any pressure whatsoever. He could run it that way but I couldnt. He got 2nd. I loaned my muffler saws in 4ci 5ci 6ci and open saw and they all took 1st there.
I like a good self feed, but it's got to be smooth. There can't be any chatter or jerk. This particular chain borders on too aggressive. But. I believe we can make it fast. Or, I may just be pizzing up a rope.
Had a 9" maple cant to test the 2 in, so that's what I used. 2 cuts each. 562xp was the test mule. The chain I just filed for the chain race: 2.49 2.55 The chain I took the cutters back on and stoned: 2.55 2.57 It's still very agressive.. Can't put much pressure on it at all.. Has made some head way though. Needs more power...
Here's one of the latest file jobs.. There's more to do.. But getting the filing right is the most important part.. Proper lean, and proper corner...
I think I'm understanding what you mean "stoning" the cutter but does anyone have a really good pic of this? And what do you use?
