When ya make a chain sharper from the underside of the cutter, the chain will naturally cut and feed more aggressively. If you touch the rakers at all, it'll pull more like s chisel plow than a moldboard plow... And that wood was harder than anticipated... So the factory chains had the saw in the high side of happy RPM range, allowing me to apply pressure as the saw would allow... Most of the chains were smooth, thus most would bore cut, and that's a good thing... 2 were not quite agressive enough, forcing me to really pry to get the most out of them. I will do a little testing with them, but I'll put them on the Mutt to do it.. Bet we see some different results!!
Hope you didnt even try to borecut with mine .......... I saw a N in the column and shook my head. Harder wood ................ oh well, it was fun to do this no matter what we ran it on or cut. I dont know about the others, but mine dont have too much life left, run it if you want to take the risk. Out of curiosity, do you remember how mine cut or how much pressure you used with it ?
When I run them again, I'll make notes on smoothness and self feed vs pressure... I tried the bore cut with all before testing on the other end of the log. Some were sweet, some kicked me in the leg...
question Matt ,do hardwoods need a less steep cutter to work right ? everything i cut is pretty soft normally so i can go pretty aggressive on the angles in fir or cedar
Not that I have found... Unless you're worried about how long they last, then more blunt corners do last longer. The angles under my cutters were a touch steeper than the one you sent. But not much for sure..
I took a picture of the wrong one. That was the first one I tried, I'm not happy with the way it looks. Here is a picture of the second one I tried. I turned the macro focus on this time so hopefully the picture will be better. I may have to use a camera instead of my phone.
You have a lot of beak. That corner wont hold up long. The corner of the file needs to be in the corner of the tooth.
Your vertical angle on the side of the cutter looks fairly good. But as mentioned, you have to keep the corner of the file in the corner of the cutter as shown.
is it possible to get an image of how you are holding the file on the cutter ? are you filing outside in so you can get your corner ?
Be careful trying to remove the beak, it can wipe the corner off the file real easy. Start towards the outer edge of the top plate and work your way back to the corner. That is also the easiest way for me to change the top plate angle.
I'm trying to hold the file in the corner of the tooth. The picture you posted give me a better idea of what I need to do. I might be able to get a picture of how I am holding the file. I am filing from the outside in. I keep watching this video of mdavlee's and I'm trying to hold the file like that.
another trick to line up the corner i use is the bottom of the file slightly grazes the tie straps or real close to the straps
I generally try to get the corner of the file just below the outside corner of the cutter, and the pressure on the file allows me to "work up" to the corner. Eyeballing it the whole way, and stopping just before the file takes away the inside corner - bottom of top plate transition. I have learned to try to keep the file away from the tie straps by just missing them, it gets harder as the cutter gets closer to the end of its use
I just grab the file in my right hand, and attack the cutter.. Try to use "the force" to find the corner... This probably helps not in the least.. But use em for work chains, and you'll get the hang of it in no time...
Showoff !!!!!!!!!!! Next chain I enter in a race will have been from an old locked up McCulloch that I stumbled upon in the woods, with rocks in the hollowed out center of the stump I found it next to ................. chain didnt even need sharpening, but had some funky filed angles that just wont work for cutting wood nowadays .................. I will throw it in the back of my truck for a few months, realizing it fell out and onto the concrete highway while I was doing 95mph trying to get to Hedges next GTG, and luckily for me, I found it in the center of the road once I went back to look for it after I realized it was gone.
