    Send a pic of how you are holding your file in the cutter.

    On the chips, what wood are you cutting? They are breaking off a bit prematurely..
    Lotsa possible reasons for that.

    As I suspected.. You're getting the corner of your cutter with the wrong corner of the file.

    Why do just the right hand cutters look like that Skip ??
    The left hand cutters look like you are holding it the right way ............

    If the working corner and top plate are sorta sharp, I don't doubt it'll cut, but you'll want to make a proper cutter, and it'll cut better..
    And last longer..

    when you get your chain dialed in ,you will not tear the chips ,will be a clean cut on both sides ,took me a long time to figure it out ,take your time and after a while it will get easier
