if i face the bar tip toward me ,can do the left cutters with right hand ,is that what you are calling back handed ? 2 hands like this works on the left also ,one on each end of file
Hold the file roughly 45 degrees to the bar ,now tilt the file so the bottom of it is barely touching the tie strap ,when you line up the outer corner of the cutter now with the file ,you should be in the ball park of where to swipe ,you were holding the file at the wrong angle so it was not sharpening the end of that tooth ,here is a bottom pic of about where to get the file lined up
You needed to get more towards 25-30° from the 10 or so you're doing. Lay the file on the tie straps at a 30° from the top plate. Slide the file til the corners match and you should rub the tie straps lightly.
Yes.. If you're cutting the hell out of the tie straps, your file is too steep.. Just nicking them is no big deal..
With all your help I think I'm getting the hand of it . that little bit different angle made it so much smoother. I will post chip pics tomorrow from this mornings sharpening . hopefully it does way better . Ty Chris
It still looks like you are using the wrong corner on the file? Based on this pic you posted above. Place your finger behind the cutter or a piece of paper as Mike suggested. Gives the cutter better lighting and it easier to see. This drawing from Matt is a good one.
Crappola ............. looks like I am the oddball out again. I love LH cutters and have more problems with my RH cutters. At least CPA (Chain Protection Agency) wont get involved when I file .................... shoot Hedge, dont ya know that backhandin cutters is frowned upon in these modern times ??
