So a Simington 451c found it's way to my door today. Now the fun begins. At the moment not much for a picture just a sq cardboard box and a long cardboard tube. Been holding off hoping a Silvey would show up somewhere course now that this is here, several will likely pop up for sale.

I’m following this one. I just got a 451C myself. Been playing with dressing angles and set up for a couple of weeks now.

i can help but it would be easier if you had a digital angle finder
and also when you start grinding we will need some pictures
and best advice is be consistant when wheel and cutter intersect

Hey Dallas. I’m doing ok. How about you?

I don’t know the exact angles yet. Need to get an angle finder. Just been eyeballing it so far. Any suggestions on an angle finder?

Here’s a couple I’ve done. I don’t know why it double posted the first set of pics.

Thanks Dallas. I’ll pick one of those up. I agree on the forward lean. Just a little too much.
I ran one of the chains for just a couple of cuts today. Feeds very well, and seems to be cutting great. I’ll take a pic of the one I ran tomorrow, it may be a little different than the pics I posted.

Here’s the chain I cut with yesterday. I guess it looks more like the first chain in my previous post. A little too much forward lean. It fed real good, but with that lean it should too. The top plate is more aggressive than on the first one in the other post, though. I know I dressed the side plate on the wheel to less vertical, so that makes sense. Rakers are at .030-.035.

Too dang tired to mess with it last night- Got hit with that flue bug 2 weekends ago -still getting dragged down by it. I have around 20 or more 8ft loops of 404 FC to do and numerous 3/8 20-28" loops as well. the 404 can sit as i switched that company to 404 semi chisel - frozen wood - even brand new 404 fc wasn't standing up to their use ( big block saw). They got 2 weeks out of 1 semi chisel chain in the frozen wood vs about 20 minutes of the new FC. That convinced them real quick.

that will be fast but wont be as durable in hardwoods need about 1/3 of the forward lean that you have
what saw are you running it on the bottom part of the side plates look really worn for a almost new chain like its being ran tight or low oil flow

Yeah, that one’s got too much lean, for sure. It’s been run different saws. I don’t have a loop for each particular saw. I see what you’re saying, though. Interesting.
I made two cuts with it yesterday, and checked the oiler on start up. Was doing just fine. Im gonna see if I have any other chains that look like that, or if that’s a one off.

im the same way never have a dedicated chain or bar combo on a saw
i usually take all chains and bars off saws after im done cutting and for storage its just easier to have bars and chains hanging off nails and have saws on shelves
what does the top of the cutter look like what angle do you think they are ?

Same here. I put it all away and grab whatever is ready next time I go out.

I’d say the top plate is at 22ish degrees. Guesstimate.

my 3/8 is 26 degrees my 404 is closer to 15 degrees
404 is tight to get on the 451 as you have to set the arm low as possible and the guide to the rear or you will be into the tie straps
