Just talked with a local tree guy. Told him that I burn wood and asked where he takes the wood he is cutting. Told him that I only live 2 blocks away and he can just drop it off at my place. The smaller trunk there is about 10 in diameter. Here's a picture of the big one with my boot for comparison He said he has an Ash tree he is bringing down soon. I told him I want it all...oh my, I have no idea where I'm going to put it all
I love spruce. On the colder nights it's great for getting things going quickly in the woodstove. I put aside a couple stacks just for that purpose every year.
Good stuff. I went through about a half cord of it for the first time this winter and was pleasantly surprised with the heat output. Can’t really go wrong with wood that dries in one summer either.
limb up the smaller stem, roll it toward the big one, see if he can dump the new one's across those 2, then, you've got it made, keep your chain out of the dirt, you won't have to bend over that much, and cut the heck out of it.
Nice good size spruce tree. Looks like there was lots of limbs on there at one time. Could make it a little more difficult to split. Still a great score in my book.
As Mrchip_72 said, the soft woods are great for starting up the wood stove because it lights easily. I stick to the hardwoods once the stove is going. I've been burning a lot of Elm lately.
I love spruce too. It's real nice to mix in with oak or maple to really get the fire going and going quickly. It does pop a little so with the open fireplace I have to put the screen up when burning spruce, pine, or juniper....but after it gets nice and hot I transition to the hardwoods. Excellent score! Now, the question is are you going to attempt to split by hand or use a machine? I could not split my green spruce to save my life. A huge 4 cord score of that, black birch, and pin oak convinced me to get my hydraulic 34-ton splitter and I was very happy with that decision. I see a lot of knots in that spruce trunk! NOT FUN!
Nice score I burnt a good amount of spruce this winter. Youre definitely going to want a splitter for that.
