Rope, you did pretty good to hit that bear with the boat! Did you catch those shrimp or is that the bait you're fishing with? (I hope that's for you eating and not bait...)
Looks like you've had some good hunting. Is the shrimp known as "spot" or "stripe" variety? I've never had them but have heard of them. Looks tasty!
How do you bait the hooks with your shrimp there? Through the eyes? Jaw? Tail? Looks like real good bait.
So let me get this straight,..... you put a shrimp on a hook, cast it up on the beach, and then when the bear comes and gets the bait you reel it up to the boat and shoot it???
Yes spot shrimp. Some of the best stuff. Best eaten within a few hours of catching but still amazing stored frozen.
I I like your arsenal for catching bear...what #test line do you use for the big coastal browns? How much drag do you give them???
Weather threw a monkey wrench in the details. Had a cabin rented on Hitchenbrook Island, that we did not make it to. The first day we had a cabin rented about a hour out of port, we dropped the shrimp pots (2 max per boat) fished a bit. Then idled to the back of the bay about 2-3 mile from the pots. Saw this brown bear work the scenario for 2-3 hours without a reasonable way for a positive outcome. Dark was upon us. This is the cabin for the first night, in Jack Bay. The view from the front of the cabin looking at the area the bear was the night before. Scenery of the trek to a overlook for the valley. View of the valley choke point. K9’s are about 2 1/2 inches. Claws were around 5 inches long. After getting to Hitchenbrook Island at Port Etches bay, the weather took a turn. We went from flat to 8 footers with white caps and 25 knot winds and deteriorating quickly. It was safer to tuck into a back cove inside the main cove. The rest is on the return to Valdez.
