Walked over to snoop a bit at the canal locks on my lunch and spotted this today. It'll live it's life out. State ground.
Cool. I never knew the tree existed until i joined FHC. I can spot them any time of the year. What would you estimate the DBH?
Somewhere around 25-28" I think. Didn't want to meander into the brush in my fancy clothes. It has a full crown also. They had to remove some of the trees along side the canal in order to get the cranes down to the work area. I saw one hoarder (worked on the crew) take several pickup loads out. He got some Blocust out of there. I think some cherry also.
Any more for the taking? Bring your PU, saw and cutting clothes to work and grab some??? I like the term blocust.
Everything worth taking was had. Lots of Ailanthus on that hillside. I wouldn't mind getting some of the sand from their giant pile. They seemed to have abandoned the project. Guessing that State money dried up. Angers me when people don't want to maintain these structures. They have been here since 1849. It's not like they are some surprise budget line item. Yet they never seem to have any money to put towards their upkeep. Perhaps if they were a bit more judicious with their spending, they'd still have something in their coffers for Historical and Functional sites.
