It was supposed to stay below freezing for a couple days here, so I was hoping the mud would freeze up some. Supposedly it is below freezing but it has been raining all morning long. I don’t mind getting cold and wet, but I’m already tearing up the yard going to the woodpile and back.
Not cutting or splitting as we’ve got close to 20” on the ground where I live, which is not typical but every few years seems to happen. I do have to haul a half cord or so up to the house from my stacks so sled it will be. I’ll try and snap some pics when I do. It’s been bitterly cold for us for a week or so, with single digit highs. Couple nights of -15f to -20f air temp. Currently -3f at 10:30 with the sun shining at least.
I do too. That's when I get a lot of my wood processed. However, single digit temperatures are where I stop, and this year we have a lot more snow on the ground than we have the last number of years. That snow complicates the process. So I'm going on a couple weeks of no cutting, splitting, stacking or hauling. I just looked up my last split shortening and then stacking was 3 weeks ago and the last cutting, hauling and splitting was 4 weeks ago. I've got a feeling that I'll need to do more in Spring and Fall to make up for this, however late Winter when some of the snow melts and it isn't so cold I should be able to process a good amount of firewood in the woods.
Sounds very similar to our situation here in South Eastern Wisconsin. There's as good 2' of snow on the ground, more in some places and that just makes everything difficult, especially where I don't have trails packed down with the sled.
Not splitting but Bringing up some more BTU’s From stacks at our alley thru the back yard, couple gates, to the wooden walk and into my wood closet in the man cave. Will do more loads yet today but got cold. Still -5f out. Nice to warm up by fire between loads.
With all the whining I’ve been doing, i wanted to make sure you guys didn’t take my card away. I went out and did some black maple splitting in the sleet. Wah, I’m almost out of dry wood. Wah, my shoulder hurts. Wah, I got covid. Wah, it’s too muddy. Seriously though, consider this my temporary monument to all the contributors here, for sharing your knowledge and fun. I figured I’d leave it heaped to freeze/thaw a few times before I stacked it.

A little splitting today. Finished up the BL and cherry rounds I had staged. Needed to noodle some of the cherry rounds. They were so twisted and knotty. Work horse posing in the front

I’m pining (pine-ing) for some BL myself. The supply has about dried up at 1.3 cords, but then I measured and the 16” inch bar was giving me 14” cuts when I gave up on bringing the chalk. So it is more like 1.15 cord, and lots of branches and bark. It is an argument for Saw Upgrade Syndrome. Or maybe I’ll borrrow the neighbor’s stihl I borrowed to chop down the other neighbors (standing dead) cherry tree, that I hot-wired for him. How did the popple pop? There is no easier splitting and it will be dry by fall if you barely cover it. I’m telling you, organic fire starter. A split or two will do you.

Mud yesterday with rain on Monday meant i wasnt driving into this PA. Park in his driveway and walk back. It could be next week or May when i can drive back there again. Rather frustrating. Glad i hauled what i did in last month.
Rain Monday made a mess out of the path back to this PA so i parked and walked back. It was almost too warm...upper 40's! Split over a half cord of pin oak rounds stored since late Summer and finished those. The rounds in the foreground are from the weekend. Good mound of "rounds"/chunks to be noodled. The stack of BL rounds had toppled. Going to split more this afternoon. Not sure if itll be the oak or locust.
Split the oak bucked over the weekend today. Couple face cords worth. Added to the mound from yesterday. Ground had frozen again. No mud. Seasonably cold today. Split some black locust in honor of Sirchopsalot BL splits even easier when frozen.
