Another couple splitting sessions and you'll be done you think? Gonna hit that dead chestnut oak score this Winter?
Should be another time or 2 to get it done, in decent weather. Those oak rounds go through the splitter really quick. The BL goes the slowest. I’ll probably get very selective and hoard the real premium woods. Old bike shop boss hasn’t commented on any trees that need to come down lately. My dad has a friend about 5 miles away with a woods full of stuff to get, so that will be on my radar here very soon. Apparently there’s a black oak down along his driveway. If it wasn’t for rain we’d have gotten it Friday.
That’s some really cool looking wavy grained Mulberry! I bet it would have made for some really nice boards. Very nice haul!
Always good to have some potential scores lined up. By the way how is the employment prospective coming, you may have said somewhere but I missed it.
No doubt! Now you make me wish I would have saved a piece or 2. Still on unemployment but.. I’ve hung out at a local shop that I helped out w/ interlocks since ‘18. Really nice guy, military vet and we get along very well. Does a lot of car stereo, remote starts and general vehicle mods. Seems like a cool gig. There’s tons of jobs out there but at this point in my life, I want to enjoy what I do. I have a couple more weeks to figure it out.
Split 3 more trailer loads today. Lotsa rays. 24 splits out of that one round of white/chestnut oak. Had a couple that size too. 4th row compete. And 5th started.
Finished splitting today. 3 trailer loads plus all the bl limb wood. Cleaned up by 2p for a family gtg. Boy am I sore!! Mulberry and BL was some heavy chit. First for me was taking a file to my splitters wedge. Found at least 2 nails today that weren’t touched by saw chain. Mulberry galore but a lot of pieces that were twisted/crotched/and a general pain in the ace. My chunks and uggs pile is huge, didn’t get a pic. So the roadside look of this stack is deceiving. As stated, I can go 3 splits wide on these new pallets. All splits that were 24” length I used for the top. I peaked the center up to almost 7’. Wrestling that specific piece of epdm is not fun but I got it spread crawling on the pile. I just need to get some cinder block on it for wind protection. Probably end up using another piece to fully cover the front. And the final tally I’m calling a very conservative 4.5 cord. The twisted and wavy mulberry made for stacking similar to what I remember Apple being like. Oak was fell Mar 21, mulberry was cut March 24 this year, cherry was fell 4/8, 4/13 was river birch, then the BL 4/14. I’ve replaced what I moved in my basement for this winter plus 1 cord so I’m all set. I can cherry pick scores for the best of the best.
Clean up in the processing area. Made my first pallet chunks-n-uggs bin. Collected a 55gal drum worth of splitter scrap for fire making. Entire trailer worth of future dirt. And just enough room to park my 2 trailers.
Thats the nickname for my little black book. Nice job on the bin Jason. I've used those orange twist ties. Handy things. Ill bet I have a cord of the dang things piled up everywhere waiting for one to empty!
Are the chunks for the campfire or shoulder season? Will you cover chunk bin(s)? Always feels good to clean up an area like that!
