I'd go this route or the 25 ton. You'll do anything you need with this. YardMax YU2866 YARDMAX 28-Ton 208cc Horizontal / Vertical Gas Log Splitter

I just picked up a husked 22 ton usedand, it isn’t built as well as our brave 34 ton bu it’s twice as fast and has busted thru every nasty Karla piece I’ve thew at it. Cycle time over grunt. I can handle having a pile of knarlys with the made up speed. I still have my eye on a push thru with a lift but that will have to wait. Those yardman look like beefy units for the price. And with a 4way for it too.
Definitely get you a large table for whatever you get like the guys said, backsaver timesaver!

Wood always heats you twice, unless you rehandle like I do then it’s four or five times!

Between the two I would go with the Yardmax as WeldrDave suggested. All the splitter you will need for a very long time.

As far as log tray, we just use a table set up on the opposite side of the splitter. Very cheap, large and stable. Easy to move out of the way when not needed.

Welcome to the forum Old Nate.

You do not necessarily need a work table. I've split well over 300 cord with our splitter (20 ton) and never needed a work table. The reason is that I split wood with hydraulics the same as if I'm splitting by hand; that is, stand that log up. It will save you a lot of bending and lifting for sure and that alone makes it worthwhile. Besides, I've never felt comfortable trying to stand up and split a log horizontally. To me it just does not make sense. But, some are comfortable with it; they are a bit younger and probably more physically capable than I too. I just try to do things the easiest way possible.

In addition, you do not need the heavy tonnage to split wood. Our 20 ton does very well with no problems. The smaller unit will cost a lot less to start with and continue to save you a few dollars even on gas used. Too many get caught up in the bigger is better idea but it is not always so true.

I agree with Dennis ( partly, lol) . the 20-22 ton splitters are all you need. I haven't seen my Huskee stuck yet.

Working vertical... just means your constantly bent over.

I have difficulty vertical also, it's to low for me. My back hurts more than if I was lifting and standing. The really big stuff I put aside and get help or do only those vertical. I'm not "Superman" anymore...:rofl: ;)

And yes, brenndatomu, is right. Grab a 30 gun safe while they’re on sale too!

Other than that, not much to add here. I’ve had my dht for close to 4 years and split about 50 cord with it without any issues so far.
One thing I’ll say, I think you’re wise to get a hydro.

    Happy hoarding

I just bought a DR kinetic splitter from a neighbor that is moving. I am splitting mainly soft wood, and this thing works extremely well for that. It is fast.
Not sure how well it would work on hardwood but for aspen and fir it works really well.

Just the opposite IMO. Splitters that ride in the channel have many more issues than the ones that ride on top. Both designs push up the split about 1/2” which is nothing to be concerned with. The problem with the channel splitters is the channel is over 1” deep. So if your split is no longer round it gets caught between the wedge and channel and the splitter must shear/crush the wood. I’ve seen them jammed in tight enough to almost stop my 28 ton DHT.
I’m one of those guys mentioned that had to reweld that channel. They let go with a mighty bang. :)

My DR works well on hard woods also, 4 years and no problems at all and it sure splits fast...

I have a 25 ton half beam yardmax that I love. It's gone through everything I've thrown at it thus far, and most of it has been green. The only issue I've had, I let my neighbor use the machine (dumb choice and won't let him use it again), he jammed a piece of cottonwood on the blade and tried to strip it off and bent one of the stripper plates.... He didn't tell me either and I found the damage a few weeks later....

Other than that the machine works well, is strong and sturdy.

I just have a cheap 25 Ton Yard Machines splitter. I had to replace the valve on it but other than that it has only seen one gnarly piece it wouldn’t go through. I realize this is just an entry level splitter and am not trying to steer you in that direction but a couple of thoughts to consider on what you do get.

The one thing about this machine is the valve handle is conveniently located so I can work in the horizontal position from a lawn chair. With the rounds piled on the ground, I can spit for 20 or so minutes using a picaroon to reach the rounds. This certainly beats bending over.

I was skeptical because this machine doesn’t have a table, but surprisingly the two little rails on the sides work well. I seldom drop a split off the far side.

I’ve not gotten some of the giant rounds I’ve seen on this site and that may certainly change the need for a table and a log lift.

Cycle time isn’t important to me as most of the wood splits within an inch or two after the wedge contacts the end. Wood requiring a full stroke to split would make cycle time much more important.

Good luck on your purchase. For me a splitter sure beats swinging an axe.

I currently have my brother in laws splitter and got a good days work in on Saturday spitting a bunch of rounds I had laying around for months.

Alot of them were pretty darn big so I flipped it vertical and split for a few hours like this and I gotta tell ya I think my back was worse off then if I was standing splitting horizontal. I found that sitting like that trying to maneuver big rounds and big spits just tore my back up hunched over like that. Granted when a round is that big you almost have to go vertical but anything I can throw up horizontal I think I will go that way. With that said this log splitter does not have a log catcher so that is a pita but if it had one, I would be golden.

Perhaps I can add them on for my bro in law or use a cheap table setup

I have a 35 ton DHT it does everything I ask it to, but that 20/20 hind sight I wish I bought the Yardmax! I like the design much better.

Mine doesn't sneeze at anything. If it doesn't split, it just rips it apart! o_O

When all was said and done I think I couldn’t go wrong with either machine ( Yardmax or Champion). I went to Home Depot on Friday and wanted the yardmax but they were completely out of stock of the 25 ton so I went with the Champion and I think at the end of the day I felt a little better about it.

Then I spent the rest of the weekend cutting trees at my brothers place. Took down part of a walnut, a big dead pine, a dead pear tree, a little spruce and a forked maple that had a nasty lean to it. Taking the walnut and maple and looking forward to running it through the new machine.
