JB, I looked at the American line as well. Very cool design from a small family run company. They don't even bother with tonnage ratings as Larry says the industry is rife with exaggerations and he chooses not to compete in a manipulated numbers game. In the end I went a different route but I'm sure I would have been happy with their splitter as well.

I wanted to throw it out there to consider a shelf to catch and hold that first split half round. Less bending over, more productivity.

I also wanted to mention have you thought of buying your own? Sell a few cords off, and take the cash and get something decent. Lock, stock and barrel.

I went hydro after tendonitis was causing me grief. I'll never look back. The free time I gained from faster production is worth it.

I hope you find what you need.

Well I'll be darned. buZZsaw BRAD is getting a hydro splitter after all this time.

I'm a fan of push through splitters, but then you have the issue of lifting big rounds up to the beam that will make the splitter a bit more $$ unless you get creative.

Push through splitters are only horizontal. The pusher plate is on the hydraulic cylinder, and the wedge is stationary. Hence the push through. standard.jpg

In my experience, a 22T wood do just fine. I have a 34T because I found it locally for a deal. Before I did, I borrowed a 22 multiple times. It split apple without issue and that can sometimes be a difficult wood to split, with all the crotches. As mentioned, cycle time is something to look at. Now, I wish I had a kinetic.

I like to split vertical, sitting on a round. Easier on my back. Yes, huge rounds are hard to maneuver when they are uber huge but if they are that big, just solve it by splitting them in half or into quarters. If I were to go horizontal, a must would be a lift. The Super Splitter is certainly appealing.

As for your partnership with the man, I generally don't think those are such a great idea but in your situation, it might be fine if you can use it all you want. And if you buy one, it might be best if you each pay half to the dealer or at least make a receipt if you pay the man for half interest. A potential issue is his family. And if something happens to him. You could also very easily draw up a very simple partnership agreement and put in it a liquidation price if either of you are incapacitated or die. Like if either die, the other can buy out his share for x-amount. Even payments for the buyout if lump sum cash is a problem. This could be done in one page; if you need help, I could do it, I've done a business stuff. If you were to do that, you might also tackle the issue of him allowing you to use his land. Like, if something happens and his family says you can't come anymore, you should have x-amount of time to remove the wood. Like, four or five years, lol. You got a lot of wood!

Brad the big advantage of a push plate Is stringy rounds and if something doesn’t split. With a push plate you just drop another round behind it and it will finish pushing through.
Quite frankly with your operation, horizontal splitter and a Pickeroon Pull them off the back of the truck split them and throw them in a pile

As others have noted, push through splitters are the way to go. Almost every commercial splitter is a push through design. Not only can it finish stringy wood, it is less handling of the wood, and can push the wood into a cage, box, bucket or trailer and onto a conveyor.

As for the partnership, I agree that I'd buy a splitter by myself. My father and I were going to go halves on my Super Split. The day I ordered it an extension ladder he was on slipped on concrete and he shattered both of his heels. He decided to pull out of his half which I understood. I stayed committed to the order and am glad I'm the stand alone owner. It's there when I want it, and I have full control over the use of it and who gets to borrow it.
