Dave, my sinuses are shaped a bit differently but you do have some sugar maple there. Love this cooler weather! Going to get really nice over the weekend.
After 5 days, made it back out. Cut 2 trees this time. Last trip I spent too much time messing with the little bit of Oak I got, so this time I stuck with the plan. Two more Reds, and neither is more than about 8" DBH, but nice easy firewood. Still took almost 2 hours. Not quite a full load. Oh, and those gloves.......don't use those for firewood, they suck. After moving less than a cord of wood, part of the thumb was already worn through. While I'm ranting a little, the gas jug sucks too. I've evidently "broken" the safety spout so that I can pull it off to fill the saw, then "re-install". Darn.
Some kind of crappy fabric, with a rubber type coating. Didn't you do a thread about some gooder gloves a while back?
I posted in that thread about the Atlas fit gloves. I am still on my first pair I got last year,, I was wearing out gloves left and right until I got these,, they are some tough SOBs. http://www.amazon.com/Atlas-Medium-...BWV1dNL&dpSrc=sims&preST=_AC_UL480_SR246,480_ They are amazing compared to anything else I have ever had
Fortunately, I won't need this until next winter, so should be in good shape by then. I'm moving some from last year into the shed right now, that's pretty dry. Burned well, the last fire I had. Trying to get at least 2 full cords before the snow flies.
Dave, we burned some of that maple the last couple days. It has been in the stack 3 years. As I moved the splits, the bark fell right off. Sweet! Burned great and gave us quick heat.
The bark is coming off some of these too, but not most. It is what it is, so I'll get a good idea if I need to give them more stack time. This batch is being cut at 18" too, where the last is 16".
Last Thanksgiving I split a whole bunch of soft maple. Been stacked and covered just on top since then. I am going to give it a test burn as soon as it gets down below 40 degrees at night, which might be this coming weekend. The moisture meter says 21% so I think I might be good. lt was all green live trees that I had to get out of the way for a house we were building for a client. The boys did a nice job keeping the logs nice and uniform in size. And my son and I got everything so we can get our hands around.
Dennis, maybe something is wrong with the meter? I did take the reading toward the bottom where the rain had been hitting it a little. And we have had a good summer for rain. Grass is growing like crazy.
That's about the same as it was in MI. Beautiful here today too. We made about 18 gallons of cider; an enjoyable day to do it and the bees were not bad either.
Today's first tree........... Aaand, the 2nd one.......... I'm somewhat time constrained nowadays, so about 2 hours/trip is all I can do. This trip was less than that, but not enough time to do much more. Fortunately, this is less than 10 minutes away. I also managed to hang up another Red in a small one, so had to notch the small one to get them both down. They're both ready for bucking on the next trip (should be tomorrow), so that should go a little quicker.
All of these were marked for take-down by someone before my SisIL got the place. Rot starting on some. They're crowding the canopy. Bunch of Poplar I plan to take as well, doing the same thing. Might as well put 'em to use in the shoulders.
