Sounds like a good deal.....I'd be seriously considering that deal if i lived up that way.

You are close enough to NH and out in the sticks of Mass to get away with stapling a tarp to the roof.......

Warm enough winter with cheap enough oil and high big box pellet prices that I would save the scratch for a new roof and keep checking for anyone selling off an almost new stove in the spring.

I'll say it again - The stove will do you no good if the roof gives way, or develops leaks and ruins a bunch of other stuff that otherwise would be fine if it were dry. You NEED a NEW ROOF.

Fricking awesome replies great bunch of Peeps here. I'm torn as yes I could probably ride it out with what I have but for instance tonight after I got through insulating the stove room i fired it back up , the convection motor took longer than normal to start up and I was like WTF POS immediately had it been open would have gone to the stove store and checked out the Harman's. The right thing to do would be to ride it out, tough it out and wait till next season but I have been known to do whats wrong and not give a chit about whats right. I can swing both the stove and roof next spring I may have to do it myself (roof) once again probably not the right thing to do but I have a lot of carpenters and labors who are in debt to me,actually not in my mind but in theirs. (Constantly offering or asking what they can do for me,I have always taken good care of those who take care of me, actually most anyone guess its the way I am made) It will create a bit of a financial burden or challenge but hell that is life and what I actually do for a living is solve problems and make things work .
I work a minimum of 60 hours a week at a ridiculous stressful job and when i get home while i do not mind it all that much as it is much less work than what I use to consider nightly chores with burning wood its still time I could be spending chilling with the Family . I am not afraid of hard work for instance I always split my firewood for 25 years with a maul until I split about 8 cords of elm, standing bones i grant you much less effort than green or partially seasoned. I think i gave myself a concussion and my damm shoulders and most of the rest of my body was not feeling too lovely . That year I bought my splitter and felt it was the best thing I had done for myself in a long long time. With that said I am wondering if I should bite the bullet once again and make my life easier and get a real stove.
As mentioned I am not afraid of hard work have done it all my life just wondering if this would be a good decision .....

Once again Thank You All, really great bunch of people here and this old timer appreciates you all and your opinions

    thanks

Lune if you can to both Bud go for it , if you can hold off on the stove till spring you may get a better deal . Key thing is to make sure you are comfortable with the dealer they are not all created equal .

    Right on
Thanks Will good advice appreciate it . There is a dealer just north of me in Brookline New Hampshire I am thinking I will check out their showroom and their operation. I believe I have done enough research and have learned enough here to talk to a dealer with some finesse and understanding. One good experience I get with work (always trying to not forget the positive) is I deal with People hundreds of people a day so people skills are fairly well honed :)
    Thanks again Will

Fix the roof Luney. Vaccuming ashes isn't splitting wood, and you're not gonna like water dripping on your new stove. or....heaven forbid, water dripping in your bourbon!

I have put new roofs on a couple of houses (okay, I paid for them to be put in). Had to have mold remediation done on the last house because of issues with the roof. Insurance company paid for some, but still had deductible and some stuff in the attic that they wouldn't cover.

That was the motivation for my 1st post - B hit the nail on the head, I would set aside the $$$ needed for the roof 1st..

With your contacts, you should have no problem getting help in before roofing work gets busy, in-season.

re: stove - Sure, components are going to fail when you run it 100% for months at a time. Harmans use better components, but they will still fail eventually also if you run it flat-out: estimate what it will take to keep the stove running at, say, 75% of rated BTUs to prevent premature component failure, and discuss w/ the stove dealer of choice / the Harman owners here.

*This is why we are going to install a 2nd stove here, to prevent running the small stove we have at-or-over a 75% rating, FWIW.
