Catalpa is a beautiful tree, not so beautiful as firewood. There was a movement to use it as a furniture wood, but nothing really came of it.

    So, northern or southern catalpa?

A-HA! I should've know that was a catalpa, too! I have TWO of those on my property...

    I feel ashamed!

I paid $60 for a truckload of catalpa this spring. Then I planted it.

Catalpa is a good carving wood.Color is light silverish-brown/fawn,similar to Butternut in color & density. Is a bit coarser texture though.Dries fairly good, not too much cracking/checking or warping.Occasionally seen for retail sale, most is harvested & used locally though.Makes good fence posts & stakes,it has good decay resistance.

Hard to tell with that piece, but three might be hophornbeam (Ironwood).

Not seeing a lot of interest in this thread. I'll post the id's in an hour or so. Also have some different species to post if anyone wants to continue playing.

I am quietly following the thread. Not sure how many others are doing the same.

I figured that had to be shagbark hickory if it wasn't ironwood. Should have posted.
