Catalpa is a beautiful tree, not so beautiful as firewood. There was a movement to use it as a furniture wood, but nothing really came of it. So, northern or southern catalpa?
A-HA! I should've know that was a catalpa, too! I have TWO of those on my property... I feel ashamed!
Catalpa is a good carving wood.Color is light silverish-brown/fawn,similar to Butternut in color & density.Is a bit coarser texture though.Dries fairly good,not too much cracking/checking or warping.Occasionally seen for retail sale,most is harvested & used locally though.Makes good fence posts & stakes,it has good decay resistance.
