It's not firewood yet though, and I hope it won't be for a very long time. I was playing around with my loaner camera and took a few pics of some nice healthy ash trees in my yard and at the edge of my property. So far I don't think I've seen any signs of the EAB here - I'm keeping my fingers crossed but I'll be treating these particular trees no matter the cost if/when I ever do. Thought I'd share some picsfor folks who haven't seen any / for a long time. This one is in my back yard at the edge of the woods. Only about 16-18 inch diameter now, but looks to be in it's prime. Straight as an arrow too. This one is just inside my property line. It's in excess of 4' diameter. It's close being the biggest tree on my property, but there's a couple poplars giving it a run for its money.
Yup, them's be nice ones for sure! That second to last one is a monster! It's awesome that your trees haven't been unaffected so far, I wish I could say the same. I've lost all but one, and even it only has very sparse leaves this year.
Nice!!! They sure look different with leaves. I'm surprised how much of the branches you can see toward the canopy. Kinda reminds me of Siberian elm. That second pic sure is a nice shape. I can now kind of picture what some of our wood looked like our EAB. Thanks for sharing.
I never burn ash, or cut it to mill it. Only rarely deadfall. The ash border has just been spotted about 15 miles away from me. So it won't be long.
I love me some ash - ill take all I can get.. I'm not ready for acres worth though! But yeah - I only ever take what's dead or fallen. No need for me to cut any healthy trees here - Ma nature usually picks em.
I read the title of your post and thought to myself - healthy and ash don't go together. Glad to see your going to try and take care of these trees. Best of luck to you
People just can't assume all ash has been done in by the EAB . We have several nice healthy ash on my home lot. I treat mine with Bayer tree and shrub granules every June. I need to do mine again, but there's a ton of them that are wild and not treated and they are doing just fine.
It's hard to find a healthy one in these parts. I enjoy it for firewood, but sure hate seeing them almost all die off. those trees in your pic's look great. Big uns too!
Yup dead standing dry on the stump! Hopefully (but doubtfully) hope your area stays clean of the beetles.
Well I think I may have spoke too soon. I was working on some lumber today and an emerald green beetle landed on the log - tried to kill it but it got away. A couple weeks ago I think I saw a couple of the stingless wasps they released to try to control them - the one was checking out the ash I got from the neighbor. Guess I'll have front row seats for the battle. I'm definitely not going to remain neutral in the fight - Horkn - where did you buy your treatment stuff?
