I used to drive an early 80's chevy with a 454 and a granny 4 speed on the farm. It would pull like a locomotive and top out at 64 MPH.

The one I speak of had a straight 6. Straddled to that granny tranny it was painfully slow.

Probably a 305. There were 302 and 307 GM small block v8s though too, but you say 302, and most folks associate that as the old pushrod 5.0 (302) Ford. The 5.0 displacement limit for trans am class racing in the 60s and 70s made the 302 happen at GM.

Doubt it. The only use of the rock crusher that I'm aware of was in high performance cars...GTO, Chevelle, Nova..etc.
You could here that sucker whine!
Here is a short vid of one but the guy skips 3rd gear intentionally.

WWW says it uses ATF instead of gear oil if that gives you any clues? We have no idea if Muncie or other kind. Except he is now making fun of me because I drive like a granny now:rofl:

So, I'm guessing Muncie sm465. Based on years. This one definitely had no syncros down in the first gear.

Apologize for the :Yar: Backwoods Savage ....:emb:

Horkn, it has to be at very specific rpms to get into granny and reverse, actually I remember constantly going forward an inch to get into R, and much easier to get into granny at a very very slow roll after rpms fall. Afraid Synchro is over my head for knowledge but its a good old truck and the tranny is one of the few remaining orig parts that has not been repaired. I googled Muncie a few posts back and that is excactly what the shift stick looks like.

We had an '84 F150 with a first gear that couldn't be used unless towing dad's boat up Everest:rofl:
2nd-4th gears any other time. 4 low felt strong enough in 1st gear to pull down a skyscraper....
    302 motor.
    Gooder truck.

I had a car that would slip out of Park without any help so I used the E brake to make sure it didn't go anywhere. I've been in the position of trying to keep the car from backing itself out of a parking space, unlocking the door and stepping on the brake. Not fun, but probably funny to watch  .

m22 muncie 4 speeds are hot rod sticks that aren't truck heavy duty. the real good car 4 speeds are aluminum case not cast iron. the rock crusher name comes from straight cut gears and the whining noise they make .they handle good horsepower and because of restorations have become pricey.
