I love my CS-400, it's light, starts better/easier/faster than the Stihl, is light enough to limb with, yet is powerfull enough to burry the 18" bar into big Red oak rounds. I've never had any issues with the Echo, except for having to make two cuts to cut 25 or 30" rounds, which is why I got the larger Stihl.
I have a 192 as well and really love that saw. If only it had a bit more grunt. You just have to have another saw with the 192. I did get to run a new Dolmar 421 for a bit today and if my 192 died tomorrow I would more than likely get the 421. But there is a reason I like this saw so much. I am really happy with my Echo 341. I was originally in the same place you are. An MS290 only and was looking for something lighter. Worked out well, now my choices continue to grow. The 290 doesn't get used often now but it still has its place in the hierarchy.
Those 192s are a little wonky looking but they are light little beasties! If loving them is wrong I don't want to be right. You open the muffler up and let that one breath better?
You can most likely sell the 290 for what you paid for it if you get it running correctly. There are saws that are much more ergonomically friendly than the MS290 for sure. Are we looking at new saws I presume? You should make a decision ahead of time if you want to own 1 saw, 2 saws, or ALL OF THEM. I think we can guess which category a lot of us here are in. Jokes aside, if you are looking to own 1 saw, cut small amounts of wood and just want something that performs as good as the 290 (or perhaps a bit better, ) but is easier on the operator, then a 50cc pro-grade saw would fit the bill quite nicely. Two saws you say? Then I'd go 40cc/60cc for the combo. The 40cc options vary widely in price and build but my short list would be the following: Dolmar 421, Echo CS400, or the Stihl MS241. 60cc list is a little tougher as its a category crowded with great saws. But as a complement to the above and a replacement to the MS290: Husqvarna 555, Dolmar 6100, and the Echo 600P.
Ya I opened the muffler a bit. I left the baffle in but angle ground the holes to just let the exhaust slip by easier without losing much back pressure. I am sure it could be opened up more but it runs pretty good the way it is. I don't know another 30cc saw that will run better then it. An update I don't think it helped the fuel milage though. Only thing I hate about the Stihl 241....is the price Ive never ran one....but would love to. I'll never own one new..maybe used....10 years down the road lol !
I'd send ya one just to run a bit if I had one Fuzz! They feel very un-Stihl like. Close your eyes and you'd swear it was all orange.
I would sell the ms290 for $300-$325, and buy a new dolmar 421. I would have the dealer switch it over to 16" 325 bar and chain. I cut 4-9 cords a year and the 421 dolmar/4300ea makita is used for 80% of all cutting I do. I break out the 7900 or 6800i if I need a bigger saw. I do get into 40"+ oak too so not everything is small stuff. If you need something bigger later, you can come back and ask for more opinions then. Also just so we know... Echo and husky are carried by box stores. Are these actual dealers or just retail centers? There is a huge difference in product quality between pro and box store saws. Also you'll get better service at a local shop. Keep in mind makita owns dolmar and Home Depots have the makita dealer license. So you can get a makita 4300ea at HD. And while people won't want to admit it... Getting a makita through HD is probably easier. If it breaks they won't care and will give you a new one. But these are very rugged pro saws. Seems the makita costs a few bucks more...blue paint must be expensive But.....I think the blue looks pretty sweet !! I'll have me a 421 Dolmar...or makita 4300 someday !!! Great saw ! Perfect with 16" bar .
You guys might all ready know this but you can get a little stamped steel spur that's a bolt on for the 192. I like it a lot better than what comes standard.
I I keep forgetting to ask my dealer if he has one. I would really like one my plastic ones are worn down a lot.
